When they don't burn anymore? It's what the plants receive that counts, so take the age into consideration by adjusting side reflecting panels, light height, etc.

So have you experienced a difference in plant vigor with a new bulb compared to one that has been used for 8-9 months (everything else being equal)?

Hey there Uncle Ben. Quick question for you because Ive heard conflicting advice elsewhere and your advice to me is golden. I have a 270w HPS in a cool tube. It is cool to the touch even when its been running for 4 or 5 hours. Ive got about a 1.5 sq. ft and 7 foot tall closet with 6 bushy girls in there. How far away should I keep my light from the canopy? My light chart says 5 or 6 inches for optimal lumens and penetration, but Ive read that keeping the light 10 - 12 inches above will induce more stretching. My biggest issue is the massive vegetation, I think 6 girls for this size room might have been too much but Im 12 days into flowering now so its too late to change.
Anyway advice would be greatly appreciated. Attached pics are for reference.

Thanks for answering my question UB, plus rep.
If there getting too big just switch um. You can have your plant as close to your bulb, to the point that it wont burn. General rule of thumb, if you can place your hand between the light and your plant without burning yourself your fine. Or just put a temp reader right there.

The back of your hand doesn't measure PAR values, only heat. Apples and oranges........ but one of those forum paradigms where "if someone says it and another repeats it, it must be true" LOL. Learn to read your plants, not erroneous forum mantras.
Here's an old chart on f.c. measurements I did a long time ago with lamps in a small horizontal hood using a spectral material gull wing insert:
DISTANCE FROM LIGHT............F.C. READING
.......................250W HPS...........600W HPS
Within 6" (Way off 10K f.c. scale, for both lamps)
6".......................10,000...............10K+
8".......................7,100.................10K+
12"......................4,800................8,700
18"......................2,800................5,600

Frame of reference: sun = 9,000 - 10,000 average, clear day;
Cool White fluor measured 2" from bulb = 1,200

You can give a plant too much light, see my sig link. What you as a grower must learn is your plant's light saturation point, or where less is more. When you start bleaching out the chlorophyll, you've done past that point. Best guess on a 270W HPS is about 10" away but there are too many factors involved for a black/white answer. Recommend a light meter that registers to 10K f.c.

Thank you Uncle Ben. That was the answer I was waiting for, and I am trying to learn my plants. Some need water more often than others. Some need nutes when others dont. It is such a learning experience, but having someone who knows his shit and has been there and done that is so valuable. Thank you for sharing such valuable knowledge.
I had this chart:View attachment 1483910 but wasnt 100% sure which is why I asked.
Recently one of my tents runs really cool (about 19-20C) so I have been periodically bringing it up to 29-30 then back down again by turning off the cool tubes fan (no budget to add a thermostat controller at the moment). This has seemed to increase water uptake and promoted faster growth. Have you ever heard of gardeners using light heat stress in a similar way they use LST? In the future I would like to do more experimenting, but right now its not a priority.

Hey UB , I was diagnosing a leaf symptom that I have never had before . I read over your moisture stress thread and think this was mabey caused by under watering . The pot was super light when I watered and she was transplanted about 4 days ago . Notice in the pic the leaf edges only rolled up , is this what you call leaf margin cupping ?

4 side drainholes are stuffed with old foam. Being that the pot is rather old, I reinforced the bottom with duck tape. Center hole has X thru tape. Temporary home for an avocado plant until I can construct my greenhouse.

Hi UB, thanks for all your great stuff, I stumbled across one of your threads a week ago, and you have made this noob rethink everything. The plant I currently have is in organic soil, and has only has seasol and fish emulsion, simply because it was young and I didn't want to hit it with all the dam chemicles I bought.
I was going to use a seed and clone starter as a foliar spray, but since I no longer want to use chemicles, and my plant looks like she could use a spray of something, what would you recommend, straight water, or something more natural mixed in.
