i'm not glad that the government is telling people what they can and cannot eat.

i'm glad that there's teachers and educators with enough balls to do something when they notice that their classroom's average weight has gone up significantly in the past 15-20 years. a 9th grade teacher or a principal who's been doing it for 25 years always looks at high school kids. they used to look at a healthy classroom. now they look at a classroom or a school where almost half of the kids are overweight and an alarming number of their students are becoming obese before the age of 18.

it's not pretty, but society is failing our youth and somebody has to step in and give these kids a chance to have a healthy life.

because the schools need the money. they 'rent' out the hall space.... just like a school district was planning on putting advertisements on the side of school buses to make up a budget short fall.......

But at the very least this would restrict access, which is the overall point of the legislation.

Restricting access doesn't restrict jack shit, it just makes a otherwise legal action illegal. Drugs are restricted, but I can get any that I desire. Guns have restrictions, but the most cold blooded murderer/rapist out on parole can pick one up any day and start killing. Restricting the use of things doesn't make them go away.

Er, as I read it, it is for city owned properties, not all of Boston-- this would include schools as well as city worker offices mostly. I would assume you don't want to pay for the health care of obese public servants for their many years of retirement.

I was under the impression that the right wanted local control over local things but when ever we see some local government doing something they believe is good for their citizens the right is STILL upset about something. Can they never be happy?

they're not making it a crime. they're banning certain foods from school. if you hadn't noticed parents seemed to have stopped feeding their kids right. kids are getting fat.

Nothing to do with billions in ad campaigns and marketing to teens and youngsters? Nothing to do with the fact that Ronald McDonald is the most well known figure in the U.S. for children? Nothing to do with big gulps and corn sweetner put in everything? Nothing to do with bags of salt and fat and carbs hawked to every child from every billboard and tv show?

The second-most chosen was Subway, with 10% of kids claiming it as a favorite. About 8% of kids surveyed said Burger King was their favorite fast-food restaurant.

More important is why they are choosing it. According to Technomic's report, the "influence of a toy is much stronger for kids than parents in a kids' meal-purchasing decision." About 87% of six- and seven-year-old kids and 80% of kids ages eight and nine said they enjoyed getting a toy with their kids' meals, according to the report. "The Happy Meal has become a staple in the American family lifestyle, " said Mr. Tristano.

Now, you might say that it is the family's choice to buy McDonalds for their kids, but that isn't what you asked. Check this link for the growth in obesity:

In 1850, kids were not bombarded with advertising nearly the size of some states' annual budgets. The dollars work at changing people's purchasing habits-- otherwise they wouldn't spend it. AND they know their food is bad for kids when eaten regularly. Not too different from cigarettes a few years back...
