Canadians and their Medical Coverage

What are the sales taxes in Canada? Federal and Provincial?

Looks like it 13% in Ont? Is that right? That would be a combined tax of 42% for the top earners. Wow, both the states and ca have a problem with that.

I have been a proponet of the Canadian Health system for years. It is sad that so much misinformation is slung around here in the states.

I pay $1700 a month for myself, wife and daughter, but without it a major medical could break us.

My wife was in an accident 5 years ago, it ended up total bill just over $500,000.

Yeah we have great doctors, but at what cost.

I keep hoping one day we will adopt Canada's heath plan.

But sadly big business has its hands so immeshed with government I don't see it happening.

Well the health system could use some improvements but i wont bitch about it too much, Almost all jobs offer some kind of benefits (tim hortins offers 80%)
Yes it will cover basic issues such as broken bones or regular medical check ups but not much else unless u are on your death bed, then u still need to wait.
I had a friend wait over a year for her disability to activate while she was undergoing chemo, she received the money 4 months before she passed.
My aunt is a nurse and she prefers working in the states,(more money, but she likes the atmosphere in canada better) Yes it sucks knowing some of the best paid docs are brided to cross, but again it keeps the ones who really care about helping and not getting rich stay here in Canada

If you have government insurance why do you need insurance from an employer? I don't understand.

because government insurance does not cover any anything besides basic check ups (only medical, no dental coverage ) so as soon as u need anything, besides a cast , u get charged unless u have insurance u pay for or receive from your employer. Being unemployed and having no other benefits means u get pretty much no help.
Canadian health care is basic coverage, we pay for prescriptions, test etc unless covered by your private insurance company, honestly we don't get very much, but i went to the dentist last week, a check up and xray cost 90$ .

Jeez, I didn't know that. I thought you were completely covered. That really does suck to have a socialist government that doesn't take care of their people. Almost sounds like a lose-lose to me. How much does private insurance cost?

I've always enjoyed our neighbor to the north and took a road trip once from Nova Scotia to Alberta. Beautiful, absolutely beautiful and the friendliest people (except Quebec).

Do you live near London, Ont.?

April ... YOU are confusing people ...
I have gone through ... Chemo therapy as for my condition .... there was also symposium on the particular ... and the treatment is continuing.
At this point I have not payed a dime ... out of my own pocket. This is all covered by the government.
Far from 'basic coverage' as you put it.

My daughter had 5 rounds of chemo and an extended hospital stay. Our extra benefits covered her for a semi private room. Covered my ex wife to stay with her 24/7. Get this after her death we get a bill from the hospital where she stayed for $7000 and change. Turns out that some of the drugs in her chemo cocktail were not covered...After me coming unglued with the hospital administration the bill magicly dissapeared......

Yeah and I totally forgot about our provincial taxes to boot. Which brings our level of taxation into the dryfuck range LOL

Sorry to hear of your daughter's passing, too.

It is very hard for a parent to handle the passing of their children. I know from experience. We are meant to go before they do.

I suspect by replying I might bring retrivial of thoughts of your daughter.

But I am a major softy and I just want to say I feel for your loss. The tramatics of a loss of child are extensive.

Hopefully by writing this it allows you to know that many are with you in thoughts.

May we all find peace in knowing this is just a stop in a great journey, some will go one before and others later.

LOVE YOU AND YOUR DAUGHTER.

only if the top earners spend 100% of the money they earn (and they most certainly do not).

and i do not call that a problem, i call that paying your dues to the nation that made it possible for you to accumulate such wealth.

at one time in the states we had 90% or more on the top earners. the sky didn't fall...quite the opposite actually.

just try naming me a few countries where you can make as much money as you can in the states or canada and let me know what their tax on top earners is. i hear somalia has exceedingly low tax rates.

when i used to work, i paid about $60 a month for private insurance. that is about $720 a year.

i only ever tried to see a doctor once. i pulled a muscle so badly that it hurt to breathe, i could not move, and would often wake up screaming and unable to breathe more than a shallow gasp.

wait time to see a doctor? 1 month.

gotta love those private insurers, same ones who would routinely deny insurance to my wife due to a pre-existing condition.

now that is what i call lose-lose.

i went to the public health clinic instead, which saw me same day and charged on a sliding scale. cost me $56 and that was all.

whatever they have, it's better than what we get here (nothing). I think the health system in the US is pitiful!!! insurance companies are at the root of all the evil too. If you don't have group insurance, buying private insurance is a joke. You end up paying 50% of the visit or $60 copays, no prescriptions covered, no maternity. It's very upsetting. I have good benefits but i was uninsured a few years ago and i struggled really hard paying out of pocket for doctors and medication. i had to order drugs from canada because they would cost $600+/mo in the US for the same stuff you can get in Canada for under $100 a month... the US is a disgusting place to live. I would never choose to bring a child into life in this country.
