Candy Striped Leaf Hoppers Help!!

Hey guys I have these little guys all over my babies! I've heard that they can cause Pierce's Disease, but form wat I've read it mostly effects trees.

Some of the leaves have the tell tale droplets on the leaves (excrement)...

I've seen some mention of these bugs on other sites but no one seems be too concerned but I figured I'd head it off at the pass if it was. Any Help is always appreciated!

Those are pretty cool looking, I can't say much in terms of it giving your plant a disease, but they do eat leaves, I'd spray some neem oil or something to keep them off.

have only ever seen them on my outdoor grow in the great lakes region. they are harmless

I get those in PA but usually green and red color. the eat your leaves. cant kill em all but if you start using an organic insecticide (like neem) on sonny days once to twice a week you should see less and less. I soil drenched my Plants with Azamax this year so as the girls would absorb the pesticide and the effects would last much longer.

i live in ny, i dnt wrry about the bugs too much, mites and moths are rele my worries, i see these guys all the time on mine, i dnt see ne severe damage, and no disease, the only thing i notice is very minor leaf damage, nuthing of major concern

Thanks Mr.MJ! I notice some minor leaf damage on the fan leaves but nowhere else. They been around for about a week. I think i'm gonna try some neem-age and see if that discourages them. The whole shitting on my plant thing just kinda creeps me out

those are called thrips, i havent noticed that they do much damage when outdoors.

They are def not thrips. They don't look anything like thrips. It's a def a leaf hopper. I'v noticed there are more and more each day, and the wetness on the leaves is pretty significant. Will the excrement effect the bud?

I saw that thread TWS, thanks! Is neem oil the only real remedy? IT seems like you may have had the same problem, how did you go about resolving it?

Well on the contrary to what everyone is saying they do not eat leafs or leave leaf dammage. Read my thread. The break the celleouse on the stems and suck the fluids and piss em out at the same time. outside of draining fluids they seem not to do other harm except reproduce super fast. They do carry and spread a certain disease to grapes and Oleandors. Remember all the oleander in the center divide of the california freeways? Not anymore. They have devistated them with diesease. Spinosad and Safer seemed to have no effect on them as I began to see more and more young.

This will trip people out,specially the organic neem oil folks. I sprayed Malithion prior to flowering a couple of times to prevent mites and kill the leaf hoppers. The young with no wings dissapered instantly. I don't see many adults coming in, in the morning and eavenings like I used to but still see some. I don't know if they die after they have been on my plants though as they need to ingest it first and probably die later. They worst thing I seen is thier droppings when dried is white and will make you double look at it for mold. F them things! gassed em !

So given the choice you think the chemmy pesticides work better than the neem? I'm a results oriented guy so gassing works if it's most effective. What I don't is that if they are harmless why gas em?

For the most part a few are harmless I suppose. They are drinking nutreients from your plant. If one was to be infested I'm not sure. Like I had larvie or young bugs that was progressing. A few adults in the morning or afternoons won't hurt ya. Them things are fast and spin around the stems when you try to catch or kill them. I've gotting good at killing the big ones that fly in. Instead of trying to pinch them dead square,you put your fingers on eatch side of them stem and they have know where to go and squish away!

I would be more concerned over bud worms/rot, mites or mold before those f$%^# first though . LOL
