the cornish pasty was made for miners originally, it has a handle on it made out of dough for them to hold onto while they eat the pasty (pronounced (pass-tee).
they would eat the pasty and chuck the handle.
edit: we all live sheltered lives. i had the same epiphany as yours when i ordered 'colita de pavo' from "carlos bakery", just outside of santa teresa, nm (on the border with el paso, actually located in sunland park, tx).
