I'm planning on getting some Panda film and velcro tape to seal up my closet. I need to try to keep heat IN. It gets pretty effin cold in there sometimes. LOL.
How much will 2 plants SMELL?

Papasmoke, I appreciate your insight & I know you're not trying to be a dick. But my confusion is this: in a closet with no means of venting to the outside, how much better can hanging a carbon scrubber & inline fan be than an air purifier with a built-in carbon filter & ionizer that's meant to clean whole rooms?
In an unvented chamber, wouldn't a carbon scrubber with inline fan do the same thing as the carbon filter & ionizer on the air purifier? (That is, filter the air right back into the inside of the chamber.) And the air purifier does it more quietly, so the neighbors don't wonder what's that new whirring sound 24/7 on the other side of the wall in their closet.
I know you're speaking from experience, but the guy in that other thread with the holmes air purifier seems to be speaking from experience also, plus the guy in another thread who recommends using an air purifier and adding activated charcoal to the filter. Maybe they're completely wrong, but have you personally tried air purifiers with built-in carbon filter?
Again, I respect your experience, (& appreciate your advice), and I'm not saying you're wrong, but just like CFLs are making things easier for small grows where once upon a time there was only hot hot hot HPS, maybe air purifier/carbon filter/ionizer combos can replace carbon scrubbers for those of us who can't vent our grow spaces & are only growing one or two plants.
I guess the biggest question is: is there a giant difference between a carbon scrubber with inline fan and a carbon filter being fed by an air purifier that's meant to clean whole rooms? I guess I'll find out (if I my babies get that far).
You guys are going to scare me into setting up a tent inside my closet. To be honest, I really don't want to go through the hassle of setting up a ventilation system for the tent, intake/outtake, etc. If it was just "set up tent, place carbon filter in the hole A, close tent" I could handle it. But wiring computer fans? Making vents for the carbon filter? I'm low tech. I'd rather try my luck with the air purifier, or at best, hang a carbon scrubber in my closet.

Dude, you just buy a fan, get a piece of ducting to attach it to the filter so it's pulls air through the filter,hang the filter and plug in the fan.
And not all carbon filters are built the same man, ours are built to filter strong smells, the kind on your purifier is for cleaning regular household smells.

Look man, thanks for the respect Lowes carries 4"-8" insulated flexible ducting I promise you your neighbors will not here a damn thing, put the scrubber in the closet and the fan just out side and pull the air out. The carbon traps the scent. When folks come over all you have to do is put a sheet over the fan they dont make that much noise. Look at my setup & notice the insulated ducting, (insulated aka noise dampening). I promise you you have to be in the same room as the tent to hear it and if anyone is that close regardless of what you got they will know what your are doing.
The super duper ionizing scent killer 5000 from walmart is not going to handle the smell of flowering buds I dont care how much activating jelly beads you pack in the thing. Anybody that says they only used a box fan with a filter taped to it or Ionizers to kill the smell is A: full of shit B: not growing correctly or C: talking out of their ass with a hair lip. Sorry......Carbon filter....only in my opinion.
Do this use.....your ionzer until A: you think the smell is still manageable or B: you get kicked out of your apartment for growing weed, then when you relocate and try it again... only this time you buy just a 4 inch scrubber. Its your call bud...Good luck
I hate to see newbies get scared over something that is really and truly in their control.....it may seem harsh but I assure you I am not trying to be, its just the hard truth.... if money is the factor then i would say you should have done your reasearch a little more and maybe postponed the process until you could afford all the necessary parts.

My setup is far from super high tech and I will tell you this it cost me around 700 for all of it. I do not have a super expensive rig....what I do have is a very very efficient setup that produces 4-6 times what I paid for it.its your call mate.....thats why i never rented 1 bdrm apts ya dig I can throw this shit up in the extra bdrm lock the door and throw hella parties and nobody know any different. I had a smaller tent then too of course!

Not criticising but you should hang your filter in the top centre of the tent...heat rises and it's way more efficient to work with it than to try pull the air back down. That's why the vent holes are near the bottom and the filter holes are near the top

Thanks m8 if my temps get out of control I will but right now everything is perfect.....I had to hang in it in my smaller tent for that reason but this tent is a monster....I have a fan in the front right corner that blows the heat away from the light thus helping disperse it amongst the rest of the tent.....but you are right if my temps get out of control I will do that...right now when lights are on its 73.8f - 76.7f with 61%-64% humidity.Not criticising but you should hang your filter in the top centre of the tent...heat rises and it's way more efficient to work with it than to try pull the air back down. I'll order one when I get close to flower time. (& use my trusty air purifier for outside the closet.) Papasmoke -- one more question?: When you cut the insulated ducting, is there a big fiberglass mess?
Since I won't be venting the closet, I don't need the whole length of ducting, but I definitely want something to dampen the noise, which means I'll have to cut it for that. Don't like the idea of breathing/cleaning up any fiberglass though.
I might just hang the scrubber & inline fan in my closet, because I want to keep the door closed. Hang it with a bicycle innertube, which is supposed to also help keep the noise down. Any other tips for dampening the noise?

There wont be any mess... you will need a utility knife and a pair of wire cutters to cut the wire in the ducting....if you want to really dampen the noise you could put your scrubber on the ground and go up the inside of your door with the ducting.....hang your fan in the middle on the inside above the door, then continue down the otherside with the insulated ducting.....if that makes sense... just stand your scrubber on end like I have mine it will work just fine you might want to think about a way to get the air your pulling with that fan out of the closet to help disburse heat. Don't forget to buy 5 inch clamps for your ducting you will need at least 3 of emha ha. That's pretty funny. But anyway, I'm gonna get a carbon scrubber, since I want to be able to continue to laugh at that.

Just FYI, smell is not a huge concern of mine. I don't have extremely close neighbors, my grow is small and legal, and frankly, I like the smell... BUT, based on the information in this thread, I've decided that I might add a carbon scrubber to my tent. My first (half) grow was just one plant and it did smell throughout the entire house. Now I have 8 plants in my grow room and I have a feeling everything just jumped up a huge notch.

i dont have a fan in my grow box... if i'll put a fan would it reduce smell? there will be alot less smell or not a big change?...

You should have a fan in your box, but not for smell. Your plants need air circulation and it will help disperse heat and humidity build ups. A fan alone won't do anything for the smell other than spread it around. There will be less smell IN your box, but that will just be because it is everywhere else in your house. Unless you have something like carbon (or ONA gel) that actually attracts the scented molecules and destroys them, the smell is going to be there somewhere.

oh...
my plant is from a bagseed and it has just sprouted. the bud i took the seeds from had very very very weak smell (so weak i had to touch my nose with it to smell it).
so once the plant reaches flowering do you think it wont be smelly? (because the bud wasnt smelly)

That could be from any number of things. It could be a less smelly strain, or the bud could have been cured wrong. Who knows. LOL. You'll know in a few weeks if it's gonna smell though.

but i live in my parents and the plant is in a bomb shelter which is like 30feet from my basement (the bomb shelter has a huge metal door). do you think they'll smell it?

As for the smell, maybe not if they don't open the shelter door, but I'd put charcoal or carbon or ONA gel or something to help just in case.
