What happened to the simple bong?

I stopped into a head-shop while out of town and noticed some complex looking pipes. The guys behind the counter were less than welcoming so I didn't bother asking. Some of these things have multiple chambers and look like something you would see on the shelf in a mad scientists lab. What happened to the simple bong? I get adding art to one, but I don't understand the other mods. Someone throw me a bone.

We have become assholes, errrr "pot snobs" in the last few years, especially in medical states, so every1 has come out with some way to make the bong smoke smoother. So you have diffused downstems to make smaller bubbles, ash catchers to keep the ash out of that $1000 bong, percilators to make more small bubbles, all cause people will pay for it.
That doesn't even start in on the oil stuff.......

Fair enough. Give me the sales pitch as to why I should by X over Y, or Z. :) I'm all about enjoying a session to the fullest. My wife can't handle bongs and I hate paper. I'm thinking a vape but I enjoy smoking from a bong. If there is a way to have vape smoothness come from a bong; I'll be all over it.

You need a nice small compact oil rig. Oil rigs are essentially really complex bubblers that vaporize your extract. Smaller than a bong so you don't need a huge lung capacity, filtered/cooled multiple times, and it's vaporizing an extract so you get high as fuck.

Dude, then you gotta spend what you can. Yes your bong could be soo smooth your wife would hit it!
I haven't broke down and bought a percolator piece yet, always worry about cleaning it with as much as i smoke. What i have is called a zob wubbler, 004.jpg001.jpg They make them with a perc also, much more $$$ though. I added a "pierced" downstem that has like 20 holes for tiny bubbles, i also added an ashcatcher bowl to keep it clean, and adds another water filter, so that much smoother. This is a low end piece, i love it, with laid back design and giant base, i couldn't do without it......
Many many many nicer pieces out there, like i said mine is the entry level into zob, which is entry level into high quality glass.

@Gastanker: is that hash they are smoking out of those in the vid? Very cool by the way. I would think those would be a bitch to clean. Can you smoke buds with it or will it mess it up? I assume you would replace the hot plate thing with just a bowl or maybe a bowl and an ash catcher?

@TruenoAE86coupe: That's kinda what I was talking about. The only thing I see different from a standard bong is the ash catcher (wish I had one on my current setup). Am I missing something?

No mine is basic, the diffused downstem is huge in smoother hits though. And the laid back design makes a really nice...... fuck can't think of what its called, but it makes sure i don't get water in my mouth, so i can fill it up with a lot of water and not worry.
Actually there is no ashcatcher on mine in the pics, its a big bowl that holds water in the bottom, can get much nicer ones that you put your bowl on top of. Like i said mine is bottom of the line intro into good glass....... but gotta start somewhere!

They are smoking hash oil or really really clean bubble hash. With the oil rigs you should be vaporizing so I would assume they don't get all that dirty. I personally don't own one so you could be correct. I personally like thick straight old-school bongs with a good down stem and very cold water. Ice water makes more of a difference imo than most anything else - just as long as the devise isn't so small you get water in your mouth.

hey true, do you mind if i ask what you paid for that zob?? i'd love to have that piece.. i have a roor lil sister naricsus that i paid like 5 bills for a year or two ago, but i'm looking for something new now.. i'd love to get a diffuser, i just saw pretty much your zob but it had a diffuser in it as well
oh well, was just wondering what you paid for an entry level zob?? ty..

Been almost a year now, but i am pretty sure that exactly as it stood in that picture i paid $150 for it. I am in Colorado, so we have selection, but the prices are pretty high, maybe not quite as high as some places that are non medical......

Did you happen to see how much the diffused one was? and was it a tube or beaker? I love my tube!

I love glass, just sucks getting attached to them, then they break, or get confiscated, or stolen (same thing lol).... nice pieces for sure.

it was a tube trueno, i know this much cuz my roor is a beaker i love my roor, just want something new and different, and those diffusers looks super sick imo..
i don't remember how much it was though, i think maybe i saw it on aqualabs?? i could be wrong about that part, but i just saw it recently...

10-4 to that. I'll post a pic next time I have a session. It's a fleamarket special, but hey it works. I started a grow for the first time in a while and want to take the first toke of my product out of a new quality piece of glass.

Can you smoke hash out of it or would that screw it up?

You can always throw a regular bowl onto any of those oil rigs. I'm not sure how a titanium nail would work with dirtier hash. Would likely get some vaporization, some combustion, and have to clean it off much more regularly but it should work.
