Unique Tobacco

Hey there fellow growers, id just like to say that I received my tobbacco seeds today, I think its going to be a real treat growing these kinds. One strain is nicotina rustica, I was told it was a unique specimen with a potent whoppering 9 percent nicotine (average tobbaco 1-3 percent nicotine lol). ANd the one that really intrigues me is the 1000, yes thousand year old tobbacco, supposbly it was grown 1000 years ago by the natives up near the great lakes, it was sealed in some kind of pottery, and some of those seeds germinated, they said its unlike any tobbacco produced today. This is my first time growing tobbacco, IM just tired of paying ridiclous prices for ciggerettes, ive already researched it all and going to be germinating seeds within the next 2 weeks. I guess the point of this post was to tell you what im gonna be growin this year, and I was wondering if there are any other tobbacco growers out there that have grown any of these two particular kind or any other unique specimens, dont be afraid to share lol:-P

Yes I'd like to see this, how are you planning on growing these? Plus you get all the added nicotine and none of the added carcinogens! (Well not that chronic smoke inhalation is good for your lungs, but hey do you wanna live forever?)

How wonderful ! I have always wanted to make my own cigars from my own home grown tobacco. I watched a journal once and the guy actually turned out some decent sticks. I don't know how many you are going to have to plant to make a decent number of cigarettes and I think that the Connecticut leaves you want for cigarettes might be shade grown but that is just a guess. Unfortunately with cigars, one needs to go through some rather involved curing methods. I think with cigarettes one has only to dry slowly enough to get the chlorophyll to change.

Thats awesome how did they end up? I want to try growing and curing my own tobacco next season, I'm actually thinking of guerrilla growing em around town in random fields and valleys lol. I figure not to many people know what tobacco looks like, so ill harvest leaves as I walk my dog I don't think my yard is big enough for these plants.

it probably takes about 1-2 year drying before they are really smokable, 6 months old is pretty harsh still.

fresh unsmokeable.

the rustica has rather thick green leaves too, probably never gonna be as smooth as some of the later strains (im growing one of those too, and there is a big difference, much more leaves and lighter color, though not as big nicotine kick)

very easy to seed the rustica though, but the more commercial seeds never did (dunno if it was because of lack of light, they began to flower much later)
propably have have about 50 000 seeds from one plant (rustica)

im not gonna bother with the kiln bit though, but there are designs on the net, if you guys want to try, not too difficult diy vise.

canndoooo alittle food for the mind for yah

you can use fan leaves of mj plants for cigar leaves i actualy did this before and it comes out absolutlely delicious

but there is a rather lenghty curing process the organic binder needs to be fully set (mollases honey that type of stuff)

my next project is try to make the stoagie with bud and fan leaves no tobacco and the binder i want to use honey oil

That's an awesome idea, one fully and perfectly cured stoagie.

As for the natives around here I don't think they still grow it, I know there are northern strains but i thought it was a more southern plant.

After a 3 month hang its a decent smoke. Right now its going on 6 months and its still a "not to shabby" kinda smoke. Yea, I kind of abandoned this thread in early spring, I had a hell one hell of a time trying to harden off the tobbacco seedlings from indoors to outdoors, It took almost a month of slowly increasing sunlight before they could take a full day of sun outdoors. For the size of tobacco seeds(one could fit on the tip of a thumbtack) , you would not think they would grow very big in a season, but most of my tobacco plants averaged in size between 5 and 6 feet. I had about 50 tobacco plants on the grow this year, and I ended up with a crap load of tobacco leaves, A lot ended up just being composted. I tryed a couple different methods for drying. One Was drying inside the house and the other inside the barn. Well all my tobacco leaves that were hung in the house got infested by what I believe were red spider mites, Apparently I did not wash the leaves down well enough and they multiplied like crazy, so I had to scrap the indoor dry. The Leaves I hung in the barn did much better, I think it was the cold fall temperatures and killed off the spider mites outdoors. The barn dryed tobacco is what I am smoking now, I did not ending up getting very much total this year, Maybe a couple 5 gallon buckets full of dryed cut tobacco, but I was quite disappointed that my harvest could have been bigger without those spider mites. As far as the smoke goes, It has a very strong cigar taste, It definitely gets the job done, One strain of tobacco that I grew had Three times higher level of nicotine than commonly smoked tobacco. Since I did not get very much, I have just been rationing it out and still buying store bought cigarettes. I do intend on trying my luck on growing more tobacco this year, this time I would like to get a year supply, and try out some different tobacco strains while I'm at it.

Live and learn eh, i still think multiple 5gal buckets is still pretty good. That's what I would need to look into finding a strain which isn't as strongly cigar flavored, I used to only smoke those damn cigarello's or whatever there called (little cigars) now the smell of em turns my stomach.

From the way I am reading this, your making it sound as if growing your own tobacco is illegal? It is completely legal. I dont know specifically how it works for other areas, but In Canada, as long as your 18 years of age, you can grow tobacco plants, As long as your harvest does not exceed 15 kg of tobacco, and Selling of homemade tobacco is illegal. As long as you want to smoke for free, you can, you can order many varieties of tobacco strains online. Your right, When I grew tobacco, NOBODY knew what it was, None of my friends had ever even seen a tobacco plant before in person. The wonderful thing about tobacco is that its actually very cheap, making it not worth stealing. Do you know that the tobacco farms sells bales of simply dryed tobacco for only approx 60 cents a pound. That, the long curing processes, and the harsh smoke deter people from stealing tobacco plants. But yea, I suggest growing your own tobacco, its a very enjoyful hobby and you get rewarded.

ROFL no no I know it's not illegal to grow this stuff, it's as you said a 5-6 foot plant and my gardening space in the yard is limited by my wife's gardening space which is pretty much all of it lol. I doubt very much she'll allow me to remove some room for her veggies and flowers for my tobacco smoke to grow. Which is why I was thinking of going out and about and planting these in Ideal sunny locations with lot's of room for them. :-P I just think the idea of gorilla growing something legal is funny, imagine if the cops had gone all out investigating someone who was seen taking care of plants off the beaten path just to bust a dude growing a bunch of Japanese maples or peppers or tobacco etc.. I would just love to see that police report... ummm... 30 something year old male has been investigated for unlawfully spreading vegetation on public property, the use of K-9 was redundant and canceled for they went in circles not finding a thing etc..:-P lol

tobacco plants look rather lovely (the big leaves) yet ordinary enough (small flowers) to attract no attention.

could probably just pick any place you want.

if you want more leaves and better leaves, you should pinch off most of the flowers (id leave a few flowers on the best plants to get some good seeds for next year harvest)

id think you´d need 2 years drying to get smooth cigarette smoke, but you can also build a special kiln to do it quicker.

plus, there are strains available that are much less harsh (and less potent)

same price, the rustica (original tobacco)

has very dark green leaves and thick to boot, takes a long time to cure that.

hehehe.

good reasons to grow your own tobacco anyway and possibly to score seeds as quick as you can..

they are trying to pass a legislation around here that would require tobacco smokers to need a prescription for tobacco from a doctor (having too little will to quit on our own (cause everybody should quit right? :))

(automatically makes us into patients, sick people that need to be "taken care of")

if this legislation passes, other countries might follow suit (And probably will..)

That's ridiculous, I know now days tobacco is being abused if looking at it's original use and meanings especially with the natives but no one seems to know it's original use and meaning even most natives. Which is also why I cant ever see that passing around here, they would pull the it's our spiritual right card and gov. wouldn't be able to regulate the reserves. It's one of the biggest cash crops around here for them and i doubt they'll let it go, heck it's the same reason salvia is legal it's a spiritual thing for them I've tried it and Holy S#%T I don't know how I can legally get a hold of that but not grass. lol

And if it does go through, that will not be good because what Dr. in his right full mind would prescribe Tobacco as medicine I haven't met one that hasn't preached me the health risks, it's just another way for them to push pharmaceutical medication on us because a Dr. wont prescribe Tobacco but some other medicine to fix whatever you got even nicotine withdrawals.

But you are right, just another reason to go get seeds now!

Hello all, this is a good idea for a thread, I havnt given tobacco much of a thought.. I wish it was LEGAL here in aus, I was told by various people that's it's highly illegal to grow ur own here due to the tax man not getting his sticky fingers on any possible profits from the private cultivation.. A big crock of bs I think but that's how it is.. Actually I'm pretty sure that there is a MUCH bigger penalty for growing tobacco than there is for growing weed.. Now how the hell does that work? A packet of 25 tailor made smokes sell from 14-19$AU here, it's crazy how much they charge to give ppl cancer.. Iv now resorted to rolling tobacco and much prefer it for taste that's for sure.. Tailor made cigarettes taste like dodgy chemicals after u havnt had one for a while!

If you do another grow soon, I would love to see a journal! It's amazing how popular tobacco is but how little MOST ppl know about the history/growing of it! Anywho, thought I'd chuck in my 2c lol gl with evthing, hope ur nxt harvest ends with a few more 5gal buckets lol

Holy crap 14-19$ a deck, no wonder it's illegal to grow, can grab a pack for 4$ on the reserve here. Geeezzz i would quit in a hurry even at 12$ a pack, that would of been 3 times less smoke.
