Hopefully it's not something everyone knows and I wont look like an idiot.
So I'm a cheap smoker from the 70's. I'll never spend $100+ on some glass piece one of my idiot friends will have broken in a month. But I am certified glass bong man. I love them, especially ones I make myself out of containers from the grocery store.
Last fall my wife sends me to the store for white wine vinegar for our canning. As I'm standing up with a couple gallons in hand, I see this on the top shelvesA Star white wine vinegar bottle about 8" tall, a perfect personal bong size. Even a flat bottom to help prevent spills I grab a couple and off I go.
That night I opened one, emptied it, then drilled a 3/8 hole in the side with a glass bit, $5 from any hardware store, used in any drill. I fit a stem in, attached my bowl and bang, a great little binger.
So here I am 8 months later the damn thing never gets dirty beyond a light dusting. I fill it with water, cold water!, and bits of tar accumulated above the water line just runs off the side and floats there. Fill it 1/2way with hot water over and over, shake well between fills and the thing is 98% free of tar above the water line in >2 minutes.
Here's the kicker: the very top 1", where their was no vinegar as it sat on the shelf, resinates evenly, turning the glass amber every month or so. The rest of the narrow glass below that has remained perfectly clear since I made it.
What I learned: Steeping glass in vinegar for an unknown, extended length of time, probably under 2 weeks, makes it resist tar accumulation for a very long time.
FTR, I smoke 2-3 grams a day out of it.
