Something cool I learned about vinegar and glass bongs.

Hopefully it's not something everyone knows and I wont look like an idiot.
So I'm a cheap smoker from the 70's. I'll never spend $100+ on some glass piece one of my idiot friends will have broken in a month. But I am certified glass bong man. I love them, especially ones I make myself out of containers from the grocery store.

Last fall my wife sends me to the store for white wine vinegar for our canning. As I'm standing up with a couple gallons in hand, I see this on the top shelves000star_white_vinegar.jpgA Star white wine vinegar bottle about 8" tall, a perfect personal bong size. Even a flat bottom to help prevent spills :D I grab a couple and off I go.

That night I opened one, emptied it, then drilled a 3/8 hole in the side with a glass bit, $5 from any hardware store, used in any drill. I fit a stem in, attached my bowl and bang, a great little binger.

So here I am 8 months later the damn thing never gets dirty beyond a light dusting. I fill it with water, cold water!, and bits of tar accumulated above the water line just runs off the side and floats there. Fill it 1/2way with hot water over and over, shake well between fills and the thing is 98% free of tar above the water line in >2 minutes.

Here's the kicker: the very top 1", where their was no vinegar as it sat on the shelf, resinates evenly, turning the glass amber every month or so. The rest of the narrow glass below that has remained perfectly clear since I made it.

What I learned: Steeping glass in vinegar for an unknown, extended length of time, probably under 2 weeks, makes it resist tar accumulation for a very long time.

FTR, I smoke 2-3 grams a day out of it.

I have an expensive glass bong, but I'm too lazy to use a screen so it's really dirty. I'm going to get some vinegar and fill it and let sit for a couple of days. I'll let you know if it works to clean it.

Yeah, I don't think you got it.

Yeah, very interesting read...like to see this theory tested.
Thank you, I'm trying to be serious about this. Before I wrote this thread I cleaned it again just to be sure it still works as I described (it does) and I'll post some pics tomorrow. The kids are up in 3 hours

What didn't he get?

I'm not talking about cleaning glass after the fact. This is a cheap preventative for new glass. It's really like Rain-X for the car windshield. The tar slides off the inside of the glass.

He thought the vinegar was intended to be used as a cleaning agent, not a resin-buildup preventative. They sell a product that does something similar, but I think you're supposed put it in the water you use in your bong instead. Rez Block I believe.

I would never put rez block in my bong water when I'm using it. Is it supposed to be safe?
They say it's made out of materials you can buy at any health food store, and stuff that is safe for consumption...I'd never use that shit either, even when they were giving out free samples.

wow how crazy, wonder what it does to the glass that it resists the sticky resin/tar?-I've got 2 of those type vinegar bottles about to empty, I'll have to try that! thanks for sharing!

I never knew you could buy a glass drill bit.
Of glass? No. For glass? There are two sorts: a leaf-point bit made of carbide, and a core-style bit made of bonded diamond. The second sort is superior imo.

As for the vinegar/glass connection - "acid-washed" is a good good thing for glassware used in/for biology. cn

LOL, For Glass
Back in my 20's my house brothers would say to never use the same glass to drink beer or milk.
Never could figure that out.

Agreed. But the carbide blade is cheap and effective. And the Star vinegar is under $3

The pics didn't work. It's harder than you think taking pics of tiny resin balls floating on the surface of clear water. I think taking the shot from underneath has promise. Since the bong was just cleaned, it'll take me a few day to accumulate some more tar. :sigh:

I'd LOVE to see some other Star bongs. $3 at most local US grocery stores.
