when you pull the lever down it can tell what temperature to heat up to by the width of said item. Bagels are fat so they are closer to the heating element the temp has to be lower or it will burn. The length is determined by a bimetallic strip. two different metals sandwiched together with different displacement lengths at higher temps that cause it to bend. when the handle is pressed down this strip locks it in place until it heats up enough to bend out of the way releasing the lock. This ends the cricut and pops your toast up.
