OBAMANOMICS: 6.9 million forced to give up cable TV...

It started with homes, then cars, and now penny-pinching Americans, especially minorities, are giving up cable TV because they just can't afford it in the lingering recession. Instead, they are switching back to free TV, improved with the recent switch to digital broadcast which requires a special antenna but eliminates the $70-$100 monthly cable, satellite or broadband service fee.
Industry officials had worried that Americans would begin "cord-cutting" in a shift to internet TV, but the recession is more to blame, not internet bling.
"It's not so much cord-cutting as cost-cutting that's motivating this. There's possibly recessionary issues here," said Dennis Wharton, spokesman for the National Association of Broadcasters.
An ownership survey conducted by GfK Media found that about 6.9 million homes abandoned pay TV last year, a shocking number that industry sources chalk up to the sagging economy. What's more, the survey found that the number of Americans watching only free-TV surged from 46 million to 54 million. GfK said that means about 18 percent of all homes with TVs, or 21 million, watch only free-TV, a jump from about 14 percent just five years ago.
"When asked why they cancelled TV service, the overwhelming majority, over 70%, cited cost-cutting; cord-cutting because of online options was cited by less than 20%," said Dave Tice senior vice president of GfK.
Younger Americans, minorities and low-income homes, socked by unemployment and the economy have jumped the cable ship in the highest numbers. The GfK poll found that minorities make up 44 percent of all broadcast-only homes.
But according to Wharton, the shift isn't all bad. He said that more and more cable-like shows are now on free digital broadcast, especially those for minorities. "There is sort of an explosion in free network programming," he said

How many jobs will it cost in the cable companies? Too much money being sucked out of the economy, it's self defeating.

damn obama for single-handedly creating the recession as the junior senator from illinois! :cuss:
He said himself people would be pissed if he hadn't got the job done in 3 years...it's creeping on 4.

Hes better than Mittens, but surely not the best the US has to offer?

agreed. someone with a spine to shut the GOP up rather than capitulate to their ideas, only to be rejected for proposing their ideas, would be better.

or if he wasn't half black. if only.

it depends the article says everyone is switching to freeview "There is sort of an explosion in free network programming," im guessing that is driven by the added advertising revenue from people switching
there will be jobs going from one sector to fill the other what the net loss/ gain is and the quality of the jobs hasnt been shown

Ok leave the black part out, it's more his incompetence that upsets people ;)

All current world leaders are as fucking dumb as each other tho, 4 1/2 years of pathetic growth, Greece about to implode, etc.

Policy to fix it all? Twiddle le thumbs.

If nothings on T.V maybe they'll pick up a book or do some exercise. :fire:

I see no point paying these subscription TV packages, everything on the telly can be dld in minutes and watched at ones convenience.

and what can obama do to fix the eurozone? :dunce:

and no, let's not leave the black part out. this map shows the shift in votes from 2004 to 2008. everywhere but everywhere went bluer, including utah of all places. save arizona since mccain is from there. explain why swatches of the south went to deeply red?

Bush didn't like black people so he used his Hurricane Generator II to send Katrina to New Orleans knowing they would ignore the 1 week notice to evacuate!!!

I didn't know you still existed oh great race baiter. Retro is back, so that's cool. You probably think race based legislation promotes racial equality. I never understood that, racism through legislation to fight racism, that's genius.

LOL at the south GOING deep red because of Obama, they were red no matter who was running.

I was more making the assertion that all current world leaders are completely out of their element trying to deal with this, Obama is like a deer in the headlights, completely out of his depth and unable to save himself. Hopefully when he wins he'll show his hand and demonstrate he's been epic-trolling us for 4 years...I reckon I'd have more chance convincing Justin Bieber to cage fight me tho (Id REALLY love to snap his girly little head off his shoulders).

it's not that they went red, it's that they went more red when the entire rest of the nation went more blue, even the most conservative states like utah.

why would the entire nation decide it's time to go more blue, yet the most traditionally racist pockets of the south go WAY more red?

think about it. meditate. smoke a bowl. jack off. then get back to me.

It's called a Closet Rascist. An easy way to tell a Closet Racist is if they start sentences frequently with I'm not a racist but...

Who's to say if the Senator from Arizona was elected it wouldn't be 12.6 million instead of 6.? I put no value in the statement or the article. Too many variables to blame on a President that is courting an impotent congress!
