i think the shoes are ugly and a bad idea, but not all the articles are giving the full story.

these shoes were supposedly inspired by the 90's cartoon/toy "my pet monster", which is completely plausible based on the color scheme and shackles:

i acknowledge that shackles on the ankles aren't the same, but the guy is selling shoes, not gloves.

also, the sneaker was announced 6 months ago, and there was no outcry until recently. how this is possible i have no idea.

in summary, the shoes are ugly and the choice of design is questionable, and i have absolutely no idea how anyone would think this design would go over well with the public, but they were not modeled after "slave wear". they were the unfortunate design of someone with more creativity than sense. i'd love to see how these shoes go over in a country like china. it's my understanding that a lot of eastern countries don't have the same connotations for "racist" things in the states, like fried chicken and shackles.

I had a strong feeling that was what people were referring to, and while entirely plausible, black slaves weren't the only people in history who were put in chains.
True. But this is about symbols and not fact. Some of the most powerful icons of communication don't do well when examined closely, but they remain powerful. cn

these aren't about racism-

in the traditional sense anyway.

ever been beat up and had your shoes stolen? not anymore.

that's what i thought they were for, a homie can't steal your fuckin shoes if they're chained to ya.
