Why do Americans think they know better?

I was just musing over a rather sober thought I've been getting more and more frequently these past years about the Jews who knew to get the fuck out of Germany in time and how if something similar were in fact to happen here that I should have the foresight myself and the ability to get all my loved ones out also.

People dismiss that we are becoming a Police State or excuse me that we are a Police State and the laws that prove it like a political dissident being labeled a terrorist and all the fun that comes along with that. What makes folks think they would know in time to do anything if they don't even bother to do anything but dismiss the idea as silly and paranoid?

Why do you think you know better? I am not implying that you don't, I am saying the reasons you would list would be very similar to the reasons anyone else would list. You can gain insight into your question by asking it of yourself. Everyone thinks they have good reason to say they know better than others. What makes yours correct?

I think you could make a good argument that we are opertating as a plutocracy, perhaps even gravitating to a police state, But which law is it that makes political dissent a terrorist act?

How about we are as good as anybody else but certainly no better? And many Americans do think "we" are better or chosen by "God" to walk among the Blessed. Think not? Everytime somebody sees a clip of something in the news showing turmoil or scandal abroad and says "Look at those dumb f'ers, that wouldn't go here in America" or "Americans would never be as dumb as those f'ers!" (au contraire as I know some so stupid they would starve to death in a strawberry patch.)

I'll cut to the chase on this - ever hear anybody say "Dumb Mexicans"? Oh hell yes you have if you live in America. This country is as racist as the next. Racists believe they are better than the race they think they despise. Not all Americans are racists or nationalists. Some are just overzealous "patriots".

I am a former US Marine and damned proud of it. If I was a young man again I would join them again. I loved to fight and so did they. They taught me that peace is supreme.

BTW the rich have us all by the balls. Charlie Foxtrot.

I never said Americans don't think we're better.. Just giving my personal 2 cents. For the most part America has too much pride.. As much pride as everybody has in their own country.

Why do people think Americans know better? Is there a motive to asking such a question, jealousy or spite? Is it our freedoms and diversities we have that make oursiders think we Americans think we are better or know better?

I think it is naive to think others especially Americans "know better".

The problem is that Americans are stupid and easily misled...if you question something you are not a patriot! "move to Canada then!" and other dumb statements like that...The corruption and greed in the country is killing it..it was once the greatest country in the world.

Think its wise to leave? I'm sure at some point when I have some extra pocket change I could say fuck it and leave.. Why not? Ive been living the same boring life for like 5 years now... Id be totally okay with up and leaving everything

Government wise what do you guys think would be the best place to move? I'm thinking new zealand they pay you to live there apparently

Only stupid people feel pride in their birthplace exclusively for the fact that they were born there. But what if while growing up and examining the place, you find that it seems exceptional in it's riches and policies? God knows that place isn't here, but would you say someone who is patriotic for these reasons is stupid? Aren't you really referring to blind patriotism?

good point. blind patriotism is different.

but i think IF patriotism, as a frame of mind, could be dispelled completely from our brains. we would be much happier and progressive as a species.

Most of us know that people are people, and that we are only different from one another, not better or worse.

2 points though. Firstly - history has shown that propaganda works, its not that one country's people are more suseptable to it than others, its down to how much a goverment uses it that is the factor. A populus that has been fed propaganda appears foolish to outsiders as when we hear the propaganda it doesnt have the same context and therefore effect. It is clearer to outsiders that the information is false, and that people of that country have false beliefs.

Secondly most people simply cant have an informed opinion of how clever or morally 'correct' people of a foreign country are. Even a well travelled person cannot visit every country in the world and socialize. Bringing me back to propaganda - ask yourself how it is you learn about the rest of the world. Think about what agenda the providors of that information might be. End of waffling :)
