Training my dog to sniff out buds

I'm pretty sure it's been discussed on here before, but I'm wondering if anyone else has and their technique? I read online that you get a PVC pipe, drill a bunch of holes in it, put a bag of buds in it and cap off both ends. Then you make that the dogs favorite toy. Once it's learned to sniff out the word/ phrase "go find your toy", you take the toy away and never show it again. That way in the future when you say that phrase it will go on the hunt for that badass toy it always had as a puppy.

The only problem I see with this method 1. It's kind of fucked up to take the dogs favorite toy away. 2. If/ when it does find you're stash that you didn't want it to... the dog will most likely eat the buds and bag. I personally don't want my dog ingesting any weed.

Any ideas, pointers, links to an instructional? The dog is a full bred German Shorthaired Pointer.

Definitely going to be a super heady dog. like i said though, i dont want to get it high unless SHE wants to get high. If she comes towards the smoke and seems interested then by all means.

I had a beagle labador mix years ago that I trained to find the tobacco bag I stashed my weed in. I'd say, ""Gage go get the pouch" and no matter where in the house I hid it he'd find it. Great trick until one day he found it without my telling him to and he tore up the leather pouch and ate a good portion of the weed that was in there. No more pouch tricks for him.

What are you hoping to achieve training your dog to sniff it out? I am just curious. Both of my labs luv weed LOL. One will sit and stare and me and back at the bong till I give him a toke LOL. He likes to lick at the smoke when I exhale. By no means is he forced to enjoy it either, he comes over to it. :D

Just for shits and giggles. Same as people teach a dog to play dead I suppose... except for stoners. And I guess it will be useful for when I'm looking for my lost buds, or if I want to find out which one of my friends are bogarting. hahaha.

I think I'm going to play around with the idea, see if the dog even will tolerate the smell

My dog ate a nug or two at a few weeks of age and since then has ways been fond of the smell and trying to catch the smoke. She has never eaten any bud again, but will stare at me while I roll n smoke.

It's a lot harder to train your dog to properly to identify substances IME a popo's dog.

One of my dogs ate a bud once, I thought he was going to die :o. 12 hours later he was back to normal lol. :D

In my opinion you don't take the toy away. Playing with the toy is the reward for finding the weed. Keep the weed hidden in the toy, there are plenty of dog toys with holes in them for placing treats, stuff a bud in a baggie and secure it in there. Just make sure the dog can't get to the herb inside. After the dog is able to comfortably find the toy start taking the weed out and having the dog sniff for that. You should at the same time associate a command with this action, mine is "go find it" but it could be anything you want really. When the dog finds it, reward with lots of praise and playing with the toy. Keep it short and sweet, don't bore the dog too much. Before you know it you can taper the rewards and praise down a bit, say reward every third find, then every fifth find and so on.

how do you get dogs high other than feeding them bud. do they get second hand buzz since they got longer more acute lungs. my boy used to blow the smoke in his dogs ears n SUPPOSEDLY it worked cuz he'd sit and almost sleep the whole time we'd chill but i'm just thinking its a lazy dog

Thanks for the info FX, +Rep for sure. It sounds like training for anything else i.e. sit, stay...

They say that GSPs are really easy to train so hopefully she'll be a quick learner.

If you dont want your dog to eat weed or like him being around weed, what is the reason to training him to find bud?

and training is training, your dog is as much of a tool as it is a companion, its your choice if you want a dog or life time friend. ( a dog being jsut a animal that lives off your success)

I would add an "indoor only" component to the training. I would be very embarrassed if my dog ran up to a stranger and was all like "This one! Right here!! In that pocket!!! Did I do good?" cn

I wanted to do this. That way nobody that comes to my house could try and hold out lol. The dog doesn't lie. I know you got some buds spark that shit.

I did only play this game indoors but my dog still developed a bad habit of sniffing strangers pockets and expecting to be rewarded!
