Pot too small?

So I've got a little bagseed grow that I've been taking care of for a while. She's been healthy on and off, it's my first grow, I'm getting the hang of watering. Today when I went to adjust my lights, I pulled the pot out and noticed that in the drainage hole in the bottom of the pot, the roots were sticking out.

The pot is a little 8" 1 Gallon terracotta pot. When I planted the seedling I used a little starter, uh, plug, of compressed soil, you know, for seedlings, and once it sprouted I put that into the larger pot. Well, I didn't top off the soil to the brim of the pot when I planted the starter cup so my plant has always sat a little low in the pot. Should I pull the plant out, refill the pot with soil to the correct level? Should I move to a larger pot? I am planning on switching to 12/12 in about a week.

EDIT: My avatar is the plant just after it sprouted. If you search through some of my posts you can get an idea of the size of plant I'm working with - it's pretty stout and bushy. The leaves reek of skunk when you touch them.

Any help is appreciated. TY :leaf: :)

Why the hell would you take a plant out of a pot to fill it up with soil then put it back? Why not just put more soil ontop.... Yes, transplant before you switch to flower.

It does sound kind of silly, but my reasoning was that replanting it in the same soil after filling it up would put the roots further from the bottom of the pot, giving them more space. Do you think it will be fine for the next week, even with the roots growing out the bottom of the pot, until I can afford to buy a bigger container?

You're not giving them more space. You're shocking them to gain a few inches of soil. Roots grow in search of water not deeper dirt.

No, it doesn't sound a little silly. It sounds downright SILLY (dumb).
Go to your local grocery to the bakery and ask if they give away the 2 1/2 or 5 gallon buckets that the cake frosting comes in.
Most bakeries will give it to you if they have any empty that haven't gotten thrown out yet.

Dont replant and put it on 12/12 .
I did and you will see it in your harvest. Not funny.

Don't replant at all, or don't replant and switch to 12/12 at the same time? If my plant is going to die during flower because it becomes root bound, having a poor harvest is better than no harvest at all. I don't know that that will happen but the roots are already growing out the drainage hole in the bottom of my pot.

Could use some help in figuring this out... Thanks for the advice but I'm getting mixed messages. Replant or don't replant before flowering? Again, the roots are growing out of the bottom of my container.

If there's one complaint i have so far about growing or getting advice from growers, its that no one agrees on anything.

IMO, transplant if your roots are seeking water out the bottom of your pot now, wait until it's in the first week of it's transistion. I'm stuck nearing the end of flowering with a 120cm plant in a 12L pot. Through flowering it needed a full 4L of water daily. Indoor it is my understanding that you should be okay with a 8L-16L pot.

I have a complaint that people on this web site are serious dicks and will give shit advice then attack when you try to tell them how shit really is then there are the ones that just wanna be herd and pipe in when all they are doing is harm....

I agree... if roots are coming out the bottom of its current home it's time to move. If I were you I would move it to it's final home. Nothing less than a 3 gallon...

Puff.

Just get a bigger pot and transplant since you know your mistake was not adding enough soil in the first place.
Just remember the bigger the plant the bigger the pot you will need. Can't 18/6 for a month in a 1 gallon pot and
expect a lot since a 3ft plant would be scrawny in that size

My 2 cents- follow your gut!!!
I have a flowering plant that a grower said was rootbound. 3 gal. was too small. Let her dry some, and waited for dark cycle. Had a new 7 gal pot and soil ready. Gently cut one side of the pot and lifted her out and into the new home. This plant is big. He was right-she was rootbound, pretty bad too. It was very simple to do and needed to be done. It's been a week now and I've not seen any signs this harmed it. I'd "do it".
