Hello all you first time growers.
I am here to shed some light on the simplicity of growing everyones favorite plant with HID lights.
I know the top 3 issues with dealing with HID lights are: MONEY, HEAT, and SPACE.
In the following post i will show you 2 different set-ups. Both of which are CHEAP, COLD RUNNING, AND VERY SMALL!!!
#1 will include EVERYTHING needed, and #2 will include the bare minimum.
So pull up a chair because here we go.
This is list #1
COMPLETE HID LIGHTING SET-UP #1:
At first everyone thinks they cant afford an HID set up.
Heres a cheap all-in-one set up.
Make sure to choose with: 4" flange, rope ratchet hangers, and 2 outlet mechanical timer. This will save you a few bucks.
Thats 16,000 LUMENS coming off that bulb.
That would take about 10x 25 watt CFLs which is almost twice the power that this 150 watt HID HPS light consumes.
So theres the first step conquered. A cheap yet effective HID light.
CHECK!
Now onto the rest of the set-up to control: temperature, air circulation, and ph.
As well as the most simple yet effective mediums/nutrients.
First off a thermometer to monitor your temperature:
Then a 6 inch inline fan for the intake pulling in plenty of fresh air (along with proper ducting/clamps):
Then 2x 4 inch inline fans, one to pull the hot air out of the HID lamp, and the other to pull hot/co2 less air out.
(along with proper ducting/clamps):
Now you will be able to replace the air several times an hour as well as pull heat away from that HID light.
This conquers the second fear when growing with HID, THE HEAT.
CHECK!
Now that you have your temperatures under control you'll something to start/grow your seeds/clones in:
Stick a seed in and wait for it to sprout. Simple enough.
Now a nice medium with just enough nutrients but not too much to burn seedlings (along with containers)
Now to control the nutrient mix/ph of nutrient mix:
Classic nutrient, not too strong not too weak. Probably the most used nutrients by first time growers. (MOSTLY ORGANIC)
A little ph up and ph down as well as ph strips to test your water/nutrient solution before and after adding nutrients.
And for ordering all this off HTGSUPPLY.COM you get a free gift after spending over a certain amount:
Some nice shears for trimming leaf/stem/buds off your plant as well as take clones!
A quick rundown of everything on the list as it appears from the shopping cart (no HID light shown but included in price)
So right there you have just about everything you need for $350 (about the cost of an OZ)
After that all you need is a place to grow but everyone thinks i need a whole room dedicated to growing with HID lights.
This set up is: L 32" X W 32" X H 62" grow tent with sturdy metal corners and 4"/6" vents for your fans/ducting.
They are borderline light proof. In the complete dark there is barely enough light escaping to see what is in the room.
Under $100 and FREE SHIPPING! (tents are very heavy and on average cost $20+ for shipping)
Now all you need is one more thing.... SEEDS
Here are a few good first timer selections, all from THE SINGLE SEED CENTRE:
Buy from 5-10 depending on price but shouldnt come out to more than $75-$100 after shipping.
!VERY IMPORTANT!
If buying seeds from the single seed centre make sure to get the NO BULL GUARANTEED SHIPPING
It is $5 more than standard shipping but if your seeds get seized/dont show you get a full refund and they get resent.
Now alot of you are probably thinking DAAAAMN, thats alot of money. I just wanted to grow some weed.
Well let me break it down to you this way:
This whole set up cost about (+/-) $500, depending on which strain you choose.
With this set up you'll be able to grow around 1/2 to 1 oz of good quality bud per plant!!!
So lets say you buy a 10 pack of seeds, grow 5 out your first time but have some difficulty so you only get 1/2 oz per plant.
Right there youve already paid off your set-up and have some bud to smoke.
Now you put those other 5 seeds in and lets say you have a better grasp on everything and get 3/4 to 1 oz off every plant.
Thats between 3-5 OZ of good quality bud. So whether for personal or resale youll be making/saving money.
So now you see that HID lighting/growing is nothing to be afraid of.
Further more for those who will say "running HID lights cost more money and use more energy"
HERE IS A LITTLE FUN FACT.
Whether your running 150 watts of CFL or HID your meter only knows wattage, not type of bulb producing said wattage.
Thus, your HID set up would cost the same to run as if you had 3x 25 watt cfls (6500k) and 3x 25 watt cfls (2700k)
Here is a calculator that tells you how much each light will cost depending on how many hours you have it on and kw/h price.
They dont even have a 150 watt but i calculated the 250 watt at 24 hours on/0 hours off and it only costs just over:
$12/MONTH

I will continue this post with another HID set-up that we'll call the "BARE BONES SET-UP"
For the even more money conscious grower
Hope you enjoyed reading and are now enlightened on the HID scare. hahaha
Enjoy your weed either way. Ima smoke a blunt.
