Hello all you first time growers.

I am here to shed some light on the simplicity of growing everyones favorite plant with HID lights.

I know the top 3 issues with dealing with HID lights are: MONEY, HEAT, and SPACE.

In the following post i will show you 2 different set-ups. Both of which are CHEAP, COLD RUNNING, AND VERY SMALL!!!

#1 will include EVERYTHING needed, and #2 will include the bare minimum.

So pull up a chair because here we go.

This is list #1

COMPLETE HID LIGHTING SET-UP #1:

At first everyone thinks they cant afford an HID set up.

Heres a cheap all-in-one set up.

Make sure to choose with: 4" flange, rope ratchet hangers, and 2 outlet mechanical timer. This will save you a few bucks.

HPS 1.JPGHPS 2.JPG

Thats 16,000 LUMENS coming off that bulb.

That would take about 10x 25 watt CFLs which is almost twice the power that this 150 watt HID HPS light consumes.

So theres the first step conquered. A cheap yet effective HID light.

CHECK!

Now onto the rest of the set-up to control: temperature, air circulation, and ph.

As well as the most simple yet effective mediums/nutrients.

First off a thermometer to monitor your temperature:

THERMOMETER 1.JPG

Then a 6 inch inline fan for the intake pulling in plenty of fresh air (along with proper ducting/clamps):

FAN 2.JPGDUCTING 2.JPGCLAMP 2.JPG

Then 2x 4 inch inline fans, one to pull the hot air out of the HID lamp, and the other to pull hot/co2 less air out.
(along with proper ducting/clamps):

FAN 1.JPGDUCTING 1.JPGCLAMP 1.JPG

Now you will be able to replace the air several times an hour as well as pull heat away from that HID light.

This conquers the second fear when growing with HID, THE HEAT.

CHECK!

Now that you have your temperatures under control you'll something to start/grow your seeds/clones in:

Stick a seed in and wait for it to sprout. Simple enough.
ROOT 1.JPG

Now a nice medium with just enough nutrients but not too much to burn seedlings (along with containers)

SOIL 1.JPGSOIL 2.JPGPOTS 1.JPG

Now to control the nutrient mix/ph of nutrient mix:

Classic nutrient, not too strong not too weak. Probably the most used nutrients by first time growers. (MOSTLY ORGANIC)
NUTES 1.JPG

A little ph up and ph down as well as ph strips to test your water/nutrient solution before and after adding nutrients.

PH 2.JPGPH 1.JPG

And for ordering all this off HTGSUPPLY.COM you get a free gift after spending over a certain amount:

Some nice shears for trimming leaf/stem/buds off your plant as well as take clones!

GIFT 1.JPG

A quick rundown of everything on the list as it appears from the shopping cart (no HID light shown but included in price)

LIST 1.JPGLIST 2.JPGLIST 3.JPGFINAL $.JPG

So right there you have just about everything you need for $350 (about the cost of an OZ)

After that all you need is a place to grow but everyone thinks i need a whole room dedicated to growing with HID lights.

This set up is: L 32" X W 32" X H 62" grow tent with sturdy metal corners and 4"/6" vents for your fans/ducting.

They are borderline light proof. In the complete dark there is barely enough light escaping to see what is in the room.
Under $100 and FREE SHIPPING! (tents are very heavy and on average cost $20+ for shipping)

TENT 1.jpg

Now all you need is one more thing.... SEEDS

Here are a few good first timer selections, all from THE SINGLE SEED CENTRE:

SEEDS 2.JPGSEEDS 3.JPGSEEDS 1.JPG

Buy from 5-10 depending on price but shouldnt come out to more than $75-$100 after shipping.

!VERY IMPORTANT!
If buying seeds from the single seed centre make sure to get the NO BULL GUARANTEED SHIPPING

It is $5 more than standard shipping but if your seeds get seized/dont show you get a full refund and they get resent.

Now alot of you are probably thinking DAAAAMN, thats alot of money. I just wanted to grow some weed.

Well let me break it down to you this way:

This whole set up cost about (+/-) $500, depending on which strain you choose.

With this set up you'll be able to grow around 1/2 to 1 oz of good quality bud per plant!!!

So lets say you buy a 10 pack of seeds, grow 5 out your first time but have some difficulty so you only get 1/2 oz per plant.

Right there youve already paid off your set-up and have some bud to smoke.

Now you put those other 5 seeds in and lets say you have a better grasp on everything and get 3/4 to 1 oz off every plant.

Thats between 3-5 OZ of good quality bud. So whether for personal or resale youll be making/saving money.

So now you see that HID lighting/growing is nothing to be afraid of.

Further more for those who will say "running HID lights cost more money and use more energy"

HERE IS A LITTLE FUN FACT.

Whether your running 150 watts of CFL or HID your meter only knows wattage, not type of bulb producing said wattage.

Thus, your HID set up would cost the same to run as if you had 3x 25 watt cfls (6500k) and 3x 25 watt cfls (2700k)

Here is a calculator that tells you how much each light will cost depending on how many hours you have it on and kw/h price.

They dont even have a 150 watt but i calculated the 250 watt at 24 hours on/0 hours off and it only costs just over:

$12/MONTH

http://www.hydroponics.net/learn/hid_lamp_op_cost.asp

I will continue this post with another HID set-up that we'll call the "BARE BONES SET-UP"

For the even more money conscious grower

Hope you enjoyed reading and are now enlightened on the HID scare. hahaha

Enjoy your weed either way. Ima smoke a blunt. :blsmoke:

Dude dont do this your misleading people The Hid setup with fans is gonna run around $155..

The cfl's will br around $55-70 (depending on which ones you want) You wont spend nomore then $100 for the bulbs and sockets if you look around, and that'll make up for the power consumption difference that you are trying to make an ant pile into a mole hill out of. And you cant promise thats gonna take care of an HiD's heat cause different situations call for different things....

Thats not true. Ive personally run this set up before and from summer to winter it runs cool.

Also, the quality of the bud will be better. Ive grown with both cfl and hid and ive had just as much if not more problems with controling the temperature of cfls that air-cooled hoods.

Furthermore this is not "THE ONLY WAY TO START GROWING" im not claiming superiority or absolute knowledge. But like i said ive ran this before from summer to winter harvesting about 6 times in just over a year.

Im not shooting down and cfl growers, im only disproving that people say HID lights are hard to grow with or too hot or too expensive.

The reason being so is that this was my very first set-up (minus the tent) and i was able to pull those numbers off it.

This is more an auto-biography of my first set-up and how anyone with half a brain and a little patience can grow with HID very very easily.

but thank you for the response and i value your opinion.

After i post the "bare bones set-up" i will make a rough CFL equivalent.

Once again im not trying to say HID is the best and only way to grow. Im just trying to take away some of the fear surrounding HID lights.

Not every-bodies climate is the same, meaning the ambient temp in each others houses will differ. Some might not be that much some more then others and that has a direct effect on how the HID will do heat wise in the house. Some ppl run the AC some ppl dont have an AC. theres variables at play your just trying to get rep and likes and your doing it the wrong way..

Biggest crock of shit I ever heard.... I really hope nobody is gullible enough to believe the horse shit your spewing.

Ive run this set up without a/c in an upstairs room through summer and winter!

What more is there to test. I underatand some people average temperature is over 100 degrees but for anyone in slightly northern states where it doesnt get hotter than 100 this is a more than managable setup.

Also i mispoke quality isnt so much better but for the wattage used i would say it comes out more dense and more of it. Better light penetration etc.

I dont care about likes or rep. Im just trying to repay the site that helped me so much and still does.

I dont get it ?

fist of let me ask you, do you want to use 500$ and run a 150W HPS and for 5 plants ?

and use a 6 inch and 2x4 inch ventilations with a cool hood ? where do you live ? Sahara ?

my 600W cool hood with a 6" out take ventilation and a big table fan cost me around 80$ for a grow in averages, and I pull 2-4 Oz per plant depending on how many I grow and how much Veg time Aso.

so in short 9 weeks of running the 600W HPS set up cost me 80$ and let me pull 12 oz in averages, not counting in 4 weeks of Veg under some T5HOs witch I did`t do any calculation on (296W)

Before being rudely interrupted i was planning to post this.

A slimmed down version of the set-up above.

(ADD 150 watt hps from above)

So all in all about $100-$200 cheaper.

Let me ad this as a disclaimer for ignorant mother fuckers out there.

This set up is not the best set-up ever devised by a single human being to grow marijuana. I am not claiming this by any means.

This set up should work anywhere in the united states that has a/c and stays under 80 degrees inside their home.

If it gets over 100 degrees for an extended amount of time and you can not control the temperature in your house you may need a few more fans or an a/c. Even though using 150 watts of CFL in high temperatures is no better than hid. They still produce heat.

But if your house doesnt get over 78 degrees and/or has central air conditioning to keep it below 78 degrees, or if it is fall/winter/spring and your average outdoor temperature is below 75 degrees then this set up is very good for your first time HID experience. My house is over 100 years old and has no central air, just radiators for heat, and i used this set up on the second floor all year round. Temps in the north eastern united states where i live dont get much hotter than 80 for more than 2 months and every other month is very good weather to run this set-up.

Bring on the nay sayers.

I completely understand that and thats what i run except with a 250watt cmh in veg and pull about those numbers too. check my signature if you wanna see the full set up

But this is in the Newbie Central section. So its meant to be small but effective. For the aspiring grower who wants to have the kind of set ups that we run. I started with this and after moved to a 250 watt with a 600watt flower i run now. But i know for sure this 150 watt helped me learn what i know today just on a smaller scale.

Ive seen alot of first time growers go balls deep by gettin a 1000watt and some big ass pots and just do it in a closet or room, get a decent yeild but quit because it was too hot to keep running and they sell there shit on craigslist after the first harvest.

I still use this light to this day to harden my clones/seedlings before i kick the 250 on. and one time my 600 bulb blew so i used it to hold me over for a few days until i could collect funds for a new bulb. Ive had mine for 5 years or so and its never failed me yet.

Thank you for your response.

besides all the bullshit nagging i find this helpful. I currently run CFL for my 1st grow but come the second i thought about HID and had no clue. no i wont follow this word for word but its a damn good starting point. Thank you

Thank you thats all this is supposed to be. Just a helpful starter kit for the grower who plans to expand beyond the closet grow.

And this is just that. A good kick start without being too powerful but still with power.

I would like to put input on here, cause I am probably an average newbie. I started out wanting to get away from paying WAY to much for mediocre weed.... I had some seeds off of some good stuff from my brother and thought, "I could grow this using CFL's" Well, looking at a lot of grows, I knew I needed an HID. I started with two bag seed and 6700 k CFL's, which work great for veg... they took off and did great! I knew that the CFL's would flower some bud, but not what I could get, and knew I could get. So away I went and bought a 150 watt system (similar to your pic... sun systems though) and supplemented the last week of veg with this. I did not buy a tent but built one with wood frame and mylar lining, watched a Cervantes video to get this idea. The DIY is working and is just ok cause it really sucks trying to get the plant in and out for any needed flushing though I have not flushed at all, not to mention the many many leaks I have to fix due to stress pull. So your suggestion on a good tent is spot on...unless you have a 'room' to build. I will say, now that I am in my 5th week of flowering, that I am glad that one of the girls hermied on me (genetics) cause the 150 really only does well on one plant. I still have a 63 watt CFL 2700k supplementing the side, which sits over one main branch (4 total). Comparing the tops of the one's under the 150 watt (though the CFL one gets some of the outer light from it) those tops are 25% larger than the one under the CFL. Since, I have bought a tent, a 600 watt dimable, 6" inline fan ( I used an old computer that still booted and two 120 mm fans with total of 140 cfm for ventilation and heat control) a fan speed controller, and still have the FF trio (though I thought that they were more organic than they are). Hell, I was so newbie I started with Miracle Grow Moisture Control 6 month feeding (big mistake as I really can not flush this at all).

So in conclusion, I would say that I do not regret going this route and it is better than just in the middle of a room to begin with, but if I were to do it all again.. I would have just waited and saved enough to get the setup that I have now... cause it was only 300 to 400 more (My two video cards cost more LOL). So growers.. if you would like to learn on the cheapest side and grow one, maybe two plants, then this is a good learning start. Please do not set up high expectations as you will be disappointed. (not all of us are green thumbs, and pests pests pests.. they suck!) If you want to grow more and higher quality (not bag seed) seed.. get a growing environment that is user friendly (cause mine is not) as in tent or room.
Budbro..you may be a green thumb and had great success with this, but from my experience and again being an average newbie.. disappointment may ensue (they may come back and yell at ya as well.. lol, hopefully not) I just think that your end product sounds too good to be true... since I have done this and have problems problems problems.. A ph pen is better and not too expensive (20 bucks) and with some ferts, in which are colored themselves, a strip can be miss leading. I also suggest that you spend enough for a TDS meter.. and by all means DO NOT BUY LONG FEEDING SOILS.. you will have no control (specially if you do not have a TDS pen and do not understand about total dissolved solids).
This is the end of my input as it is long as hell, and no one will probably read LOL... my 2 cents. Happy Growing!!!

Thanks for the response! i read it all.

That is the main thing i am trying to get across to all the nay sayers. this is not the perfect setup but after about 2-4 harvests with it youve learned all you need to and can now confidently graduate to the 600 or 1000 class of growing. This is just a nice medium of advanced with the ease of novice.

I will admit i had a hell of a green thumb. maybe i just researched more than todays newb. And my part of the country is pretty unwelcoming to pests.

Also ive been able to get an OZ per plant under this growing a max of 5 plants. some simple training and relatively no veg time, along with adequate cooling so i can put the light barely 6 inches above the tops of the plants.

I feel like everyones too critical. of course you can buy a bare bones ballast for 60 and get a bulb for 40 and pots and dirt and thats all you need. but this was for the kind of grower i was. well educated but didnt wanna bite off more than they can chew. and i still use this today and same with the tent.

i really stress tents because after building several a grow box ive always found that its hardly cheaper. and if you calculate your labor and pay about $5 an hour its far cheaper to buy a tent. and like you said theyre always gonna have leaks in self built ones because wood warps and shit.

This should help just the average grower with a couple bucks to throw at a long lasting project.

Ive found with cfls they last maybe 2 harvests before there is significant light loss. and then you end up rebuying your whole light set up instead of a 25-50 dollar bulb.

Thanks again for the reply in a calm and timely matter. check my sig i run a 600 too! :blsmoke:

I agree, I do not regret, as I will maybe get from 7 - 30 grams off of the one plant (with the HID) and it will be Sensi!!! she has stuck with me this whole grow and the other one hermied due to crappy genetics. The major problems that I have had really had nothing to do with anything in your initial post as it was mainly very poor soil choice (they are sensitive in flowering, as I have learned) very poor pot that I am using.. thank god I drilled extra holes in the bottom... And a bad year for bugs! I, being a newbie, just went on what I thought would work.. now I know and read way before I attempt the next step. I just hope that people understand that, sure you can throw a seed in and grow it (specially if you have a green thumb) and have dank.. but there is way to much involved, and a lot of research, to becoming a dispensary supplier lol. I have not even started to harvest or cure, in which could make all my efforts for not should I not dry/cure correctly..
Yeah, wanted to get 4 plants going and knew that 600 would just be better than a 400 and with the 4 x 4 x 6.5 600 would do the trick.
I also thank you for your response as well. Grow em Big!!!:weed:

I also thank you for your response as well. Grow em Big!!!:weed:

Very true! and you might wanna go with 8 instead of 4. i dont know how your strain grows but if its anything like the grape god i got alot better yeild off the 8 shorter ones than the 4 bigger ones.

Just over 13 off the 8 as opposed to just over 8 for the 4 big ones.

The main reason is the light was at about 3 feet instead of 4 and some change with the big ones.

so the added light intensity really helped all the lower buds get nice and dense.

Do you use Snow Storm Ultra??? Because it really helped the density of all my buds. i really dont have popcorn buds anymore its awesome!

Will have to give it a try.. maybe as a additive with the tigerbloom.. will definitely give it a shot. Thanks!!! Looks like never more than 1 ML per gallon.. which should make it last :)

yupp if youre using fox farm this stuff will give you amazing results. start off super slow. like 1ml/gal in veg about once eevery week or 2

then wait for the first 2 weeks of flower to pass before you give them anymore. then i bump it up to 2.5 ml/gal and water once a week until the last 2 weeks. then give it the full 5 ml/gal and sometimes even 7.5 ml/gal in the last week to really get it dense.

But make sure you water using plain water the day before and NEVER MIX WITH NUTES

Ive mixed it with nutes and had good results but not as many as ive had bad. A little bit of pk booster plus SSU and maybe a little cal/mag is all id add at max.

It will last a long time i bought the little $10 bottle and im maybe 1/3 of the way through the 8oz bottle i think.

GOOD LUCK!

in my experiences with those inline fans is they go out quite often. worth the extra coin to buy a good one. I know your trying to keep it cost effective, but replacing one that stops working will be part of the "unplanned costs" category? Which we all dislike and try to avoid :) Plus, if you attach a carbon filter to any fan, it bogs it down, and the better blowers help significantly. hope i didn't offend anyone, just trying to help :)
