Saved 4 Baby Possums

Mamma possum got caught in a coyote snare and died. I found a dead baby possum on the mothers back.. it was too late it died from the cold the night before... I flipped mamma possum over to discover 4 more babies cuddling up barely staying warm... they were hours from death. I scooped the living ones up and warmed them up in my hands.. Then I brought them to the car to warm up some more.. When i got home I tucked them into my shirt pocket (to simulate pouch) and warmed them up quite a bit.. Then I put them in a box with an old towel and found a professional to take care of them... He had a zoo of animals at his house.. he said he had some possum milk.. I lucked out he only lived like 10 blocks away too :)

Though I feel bad about killing the mother i do feel slightly redeemed that I ensured the survival of her offspring..

Fun way to spend 420 though. Those possums were dang cute.. should have taken a picture...

here is what they looked like.. i couldn't just let them die. even though i was the one trapping coyote and killed the mother.. kill 1 coyote - save animals we like to hunt from being killed.. got 3 coyotes this year and 1 possum.

So what the heck do you do with these critters once they start moving around and destroying everything? They won't be able to fend for themselves in the wild without a mother teaching them.

Its hard but I'd humanly dispose of them now before you get attached.

I'm sure the non-hunters will shreek at that image but its how things work in the wild.

Wild animals do not make good or safe pets.

Be very careful with wild animals. I once found and raised a baby ground hog. Bad choice. The dam thing attacked everything when it grew up. Bit the hell out of me several times. He would sit on his hind legs and eat potato chips ,funny as hell. Scooter was his name. Had to finally put him in a animal shelter. He bit everyone. Yes Im very stoned.

Ha I seen the same with coons cute when there young but better off in a shelter to be raised and released, if not trapped and humanly dispatched.

Peace

OK I save like...every animal I ever see. Even when they're not that distressed lol. But baby possums...I would freak. I would have warmed them and called animal control to come house them and release them when they're ready. I do not like possums...giant freaking rats they are....

took them to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator.. they are in good hands.. they have possum milk to feed them... i imagine they will release them through a dnr program somewhere.

they need milk for another couple weeks.. then they will be ready for fruits, bugs, dog food, junk food... they will eat mice, rats, dead animals.. they are nighttime scavengers. they find somewhere dark to sleep all day.. in a sewer drain or in a stump or hole in a tree... they are like thumbs on all 4 of their paws and a strong tail used for stability when climbing... they didnt try to bite me at all.

I am very proud of you. You saved babies. Albeit ugly mean babies. But babies, nonetheless.

awesome of you to help them.. seriously.. I know it's not a normal cute animal most folks like.. but from what I have seen in the past.. the Ops make great pets.. oddly so do skunks.. My mom told me stories of how they were kids had skunks (descented ) as pets..

I had some mice from my backyard I know are pests.. but.. I could not help myself but to have a bit of fun taking pics of too

Oh my gawd my Chihuahua is ugly. I love her! But she is u-g-l-y. LoL. Bug eyes. Tiny head. No hair. Smaller than a damn cat. Long body. Little itty bitty legs. But you know. Whatever. She probably thinks i'm hideous lol. (She's thinking: I love my mom, even though her ears are like circles and her nose slants way awkwardly...)
