As written, I read it as "there is not just one line or locus that is modded". And since current and previous genetic engineering is somewhat akin to surgery with chainsaws, the cuts and splices are not necessarily as clean and sanitary as we'd like to believe. cn

Yes, all good points. I think that if smaller localised scientific companies got into the game we might have some forward progress. I believe it would create jobs, broaden our scientific exploration and create food. I whole heartedly agree that independent testing should be done to insure safety. On the flip side, if we changed our farming cultural practices things could improve as well. Quit growing corn and cotton for starters. Edit: By "our" I mean the whole world.

Corn and cotton are in high demand. Farmers will always grow what they think they can get the most money out of. We subsidize corn, I don't know about cotton.

Every bit of our food is DNA based. We eat DNA and the proteins derived from DNA every day. DNA is modified every second of every day via "natural" mechanisms. Selective breeding is just a slow, tedious process that is functionally no different than genetic engineering. Do you eat a steak occasionally, a tomato, corn on the cob, wear cotton underwear? Guess what, you have been eating and wearing genetically modified materials all of your life, and so have I.

Monsanto's round up ready soybeans own 90% of the US agricultural market. You and I have been eating them for years. Not a single detrimental effect. Same outcome for round up ready corn.

I don't think you are getting it Dude, it is food, the stuff we are made of, the stuff we eat at least three times a day for 70 to 90 years and the stuff we ourselves are geneticaly designed to deal with in a particular manner. If someone tampers with that food source it is up to them to demonstrate that without a doubt it has no short or long term deleterious effects. The natural mechansims of DNA modification happen most often within the same species, corn with corn, not corn with bacteria or fish or plants that are not in our food selections.

Now you say not a single detrimental effect? could it be why this couuntry is obese? could it be why our rate of cancer and diabetes has skyrocketed? how about our rising alergy rate? That one ear of GM corn does not lay me low is proof of nothing at all.

Now even beyond that, there HAVE been some indications of other problems withing our food web - dissapearing bees, strangely, bee keepers, when they move the hives away from systemic pesticides and or GMO crops, the bees live, when they move them back to those areas, they tend to die.

The "all the rats get cancer after eating Monsanto corn" study seems to be most often cited as proof that GM food is bad for you. Canndo might have other studies that I am unaware of, so I don't mean this post to put words in his mouth.

there seem to be hemotological studies that indicate problems, studies revealing stomach problems as well. There is a problem in that many of these studies are not reported by science popularizers - and because most of us don't sit down and read the original study or keep our eyes on such journals, we don't get much pertinent information.

Again, what you are asking for is for us to perform a multi-generational experiment on our entire nation and then, well, if we do find incidences of cancer or heart disease that we can in some way attribute directly to gmos (this crop of GMOs as more are coming online all the time) then we can what Dude? take all of those "products" out of nature? How would you handle our discovery of a gmo product that we find, in ten or fifteen years causes cancer of the liver in one in 70 children?

It never stops astounding me that when there is an ideological dispute between big business and a small group of scientists or alarm raisers, it is always the grant money and pitiful pay of the later that causes so many to claim that money is the motivation for their actions while oh so conveniently ignoring the billions of dollars at risk for companies like Monsanto. Monsanto, Bayer and some of the others are now in the process of seeding front groups with the intent to inject "reason" into what is otherwise a purely scientific debate. We saw this during the tobacco scandal and later involving the global warming dispute. Scientists and concerned citizens are not necessarily doing what they are doing for the tens of millions that might - Might be generated so much as Monsanto is attempting to convince the country that everything is just fine with their GM products and millions of tons of roundup in order to protect their tens of BILLIONS in profits. Not only are GM products disrupting our health and ecology but they are now beginning to disrupt international trade and export. Many countries are refusing our produce for fear of taint. You don't think is sad that China has higher food purity standards than the U.S.?
