Hi

I have been trying to source some insulated ducting that has the extra plastic sleeve but have been unable to :(

I have also been trying to find a cheap voltage fan controller that stops the causes of that dreaded 'Hum' but have been unable to find one for less than $100 :(

If somebody could give me some locations to find them or the product name to search on google id be very grateful

hope to hear from you soon my fellow THC harvesters

Lowes or home depot have the ducting. Greners will have the speed controller, should be around $30.

I use the SMS SMART CONTROLLER its around £70 on Charlie's hydro eBay store.

I use plain insulated ducting without any extra sleeve. I don't understand why you'd want an extra plastic sleeve.

The SMS smart controller is a temperature controlled fan speed controller.

I use mine with an RVK150E2-A1 during summer it keeps my 400w under 25C and during winter it regulates the fan speed to keep it at 25C.

I have no noticeable humm from my fan.

Does the RVK fan sound loud in the room when fitted and would a person in the next room hear it? also how much quieter does the fan controller make it?

My son sleeps in the next room.

My grow room is a walk in closet situated within my bedroom between my sons room and my own. The only noise noticeable in my sons room is my dehumidifier when it kicks on.

I have my RVK suspended on bungee cords attached to eye hooks in the ceiling.

Within the closet the fan is pretty loud but its not noticeable anywhere in the house when running full speed.

However I do have a stud wall that hides the closet from view with a semi hidden door to protect it all from friends and family etc.

No one knows what I do and nobody has ever asked about any noises etc.

The speed controller I use is more for winter running to keep my temps up when its cold outside. As I intake cool air from my soffits during winter with the RVK running full speed my room would be around 12C. Lol.

The difference however in noise within the room during winter is incredible. Its virtually silent running during the colder times.

There is a simple rule to follow when setting up a grow.

GET HOT AIR OUT

GET COOL AIR IN.

I presume you are looking at a tent of some description?

Any hps light if it is exhausted into the bedroom where the grow tent etc is located then all you are doing is recirculating old air with more heat.

A window cracked open just doesn't cut it. Believe me I've been there.

Make sure the exhaust is on the top and the intake is on the bottom of the opposite side. If the room is at least several times bigger than the tent then you shouldn't have a problem. What is the ambient temp of the room that the tent is in? AC? Windows?

Agree.

Ambient room temps would be a start. Set your thermometer in the room you plan to grow in. Take a reading over a full 24hours to see hi's and lo's.

This will help.

AC in the UK isn't cost effective unless running alot of lights. AC generally costs more to run a simple stand alone unit than it does the lighting.

You could try ducting your exhaust out of the room you plan to grow in. But in shared accomodation this would be noticeable.

Are you prepared for the increase in electric?

I run a single 400w setup and it costs me around £40 extra on top of my normal bill to run it per month.

In terms of money am kind of lucky because all my bills are included in my rent :D

Downside its student accommodation haha so the window only opens a certain amount and the room is usually very cold in the winter.... i carnt take a reading of the overall temperature because i havnt moved back in again yet am just trying to be prepared as possible at the moment (old saying "failure to prepare is preparing to fail")!

kind of wish i got a 400w light system now

EDIT: I know i should of thought of extraction before purchasing it, i also hope the fan isnt to loud once the ducting is on because without it.... fuck me it would be heard miles away.... RVK's are quiet my ass hahahaha

RVK's are bomb proof though.

Winter running shouldn't be a problem.

Summer running however maybe an issue for you.

Are you sure you're landlord isn't going to notice the extra electric being used per month?

If it were me renting you a house I would certainly notice an extra £500 every year on the bill.

I used to run a 600w system. 2rvk fans, a dehumidifier on occasion and it ran me around £58 a month.

in 2011 i had 2 8x4 tents in my back bedroom, both had 1200w of hps in and a 6" out take. the two tents filled the room and i also insulated the window up so no heat could escape. one tent was on in the day and the other kicked in when the lights went out at 6pm. the tents were being exhausted inside the room and not to the outside, the next room along had a small window 10" x 36" which i basically kept open from may- aug and that was enough to keep my temps at 75 lights on and 70 lights off.

it is possible to grow without exhausting to outside even in the height of summer. i even added a big dehumidifer in the last 3 weeks in the room which no doubt raised the temps even further, i still pulled a gram per watt which is all you basically ask for when growing cheese.

at the minute i have a 2400w room which is cooled by an 8" acoustic box fan, again i vent into the next room and not to the outside of the house. my temps are fine, i have a window open and that seems to be enough for that garden too.

i think a 4" fan without a filter or speed controller would be good enough to cool a 1mx1mx1.8m tent and a bare bulb 400 hps. that would be a good place to start for 300 quid you can have all you need to grow half a k of nice herb.

sorry to disagree with you jon, i respect you as a grower but i think he doesn't need to worry about speed controllers and venting to the outside just yet, maybe further down the line.

Its less student accommodation and more student halls haha so i doubt they will notice because there is so many people in the place.

quick pic of the inside of one of the tents
thanks for the advice kind of made me happier now and man! i want! your setup! haha

start small, build up. if you haven't bought anything you should opt for a tent and a 400w you should easily manage that.

- acoustic 6 inch ducting
- Rhino 6 inch carbon filter
- 6 Inch hortiline clip fan

Hydropjonics

- Wilma 4 pot (with pump and drippers)

keep the ducting as short as possible , yet at the same time try and get the exhaust as far away from the intake as you can whilst keeping bends to a minimum. you should be ok to have it facing in the direction of the window. it will be hot in there for the summer months, however the air cooled light won't get too hot, you should be able to touch the glass. run your lights at night and keep the fan on constantly , a speed controller does help with noise but will raise temperatures. the plants pretty much like the same conditions we do, some strains even do really well in high temperatures.

the only concern i have is that the wilmas run on a res that is under the pots( i think, i have no exp using them) which will mean it is in the tent and subject to the warmer temperatures. ideally you want to keep the water colder than the general temperature of the grow room. high temps in the res can cause a lot of issues with oxygen levels and algaes etc.

i know nothing about the strain, autos are usually light feeders so start light on nutrients

To be fair I tend to forget that people don't always want to do it perfect first time.

As GHB stated it should work.

My only concern would be temps.

I have used a wilma4 pot before (as GHB already knows as he won my guess the yield contest) in hydroton the res temp isn't too much of an issue.

My biggest issue during higher temps when I used the wilma was evaporation from the res adding to the RH within my grow which was already high causing me some botrytis aka bud rot.

The best thing you can do is run some test runs when you get to halls. BEFORE even popping any seeds.

Get the levels manageable and work from there.
