here's the issue; my stepdad and i always have these smoking debates about the weed of today vs the weed of "back in the day". he says that todays dank is good, but pales in comparison to the classics such as acapulco gold, panama red, thai stick, and (not fair) temple balls:mrgreen:. i argue that those strains were the breeding start of alot of the strains we have today(skunk comes to mind). no matter what i bring him to smoke on, he is convinced. any of you older smokers able to recommend a couple of strains that remind you of when weed was sold by fingers and not grams??

My dad seems to feel the opposite, saying that the best columbian tops were only about the quality of decent BC... And he had good connections and the best pot around. Whenever I show him some super-chron, he takes one or two hits and lays back. He agrees with your stepdad about the hash, although he prefered Turkish black, or turkish goverment issue Hash when the black wasn't around.

Trust me, my parents were as big a hippies as any, and they both say the fire I sometimes get blows their grass out of the water. I see two scenarios that could be happening here. Either your stepdad is having a difficult time admitting that your chronic is, well, more chronic than his was... Or you have been showing him ditch-weed. No insult intended, so don't take it the wrong way. I actually think it's more likely the first possibility I mentioned you seem to know what you are doing.

There was actually a study done in the 70's by the U.S. government (The CIA, in particular, I believe) where they tested various samples of weed seized from all over the world. Most of the samples came in somewhere between 3% and 13%, somewhere around there, except for Thai Sticks, which measured at 22%. The reason for this is that Thai Sticks were adulterated with hash oil before shipping. I wish people still adulterated thier weed with hash oil, wouldn't that be sick? Anyway, my point is they had seized some of the very pot you mentioned. I believe the Acapulco Gold and Panama Red tested in the low teens. So basically, they were the best unadulterated weed you could get. I have had many conversations with both my parents about this. The general concensus around here is that while the quality of weed has gone up, the quality and of hash has gone down a little, or at least the really good hash is way too hard to find, lol, but even regular hash only comes around so often... I have yet to show them bubble-hash though, so you never know.

Basically I think you are right. Your logic is also good. Many of these strains were the basis for many early Sativa/Indica Hybrids, which ultimately became the plethora of varieties available now. Of course weed is better now. Theres been decades of selective breeding, usually for potency alone. Nowdays people breed for color and flavor too, but if the potency hadn't been increased in the last couple decades, their efforts would be less rewarding. Anyway, it WOULD be nice to actually hear from someone who actually is from this generation. I'm sure my secondhand info is alright, but I know you are really looking for firsthand info. Just sharing my experience on this issue, hope I helped a little

+rep for you for taking the time to at least offer your opinion; out of 20 views, you are the first person to offer any help..... i have told him the facts, and smoked some really good weed with him over the years; but i think like you said, he just doesnt want to admit that they are at least "as good as".

I sold a little pot around D.C. in the late 60"s . . . 120$ lb / 15 a lid (oz) and have grown my stash since the mid-70's. There were some 'special" strains back then . . . Santa Marta Gold comes to mind, Oxacan, others I can't spell, like Mish-me-a-con . . . there's no doubt in my mind that today's strains are much stronger. I mean, it don't get much better than one hit citrus, IMO.
Dad never smoked pot, RIP, but once we had just fluffed some "blond Lebanese" I think, and he came home from work early, so we dumped it in his pipe tobacco humidor type thingy.
I'll never forget the old bigot, kicked back in his red recliner, listening to Neil Young thru headphones that day. He never knew.

Footnote: I moved away right after hi-school and didn't see any of my family much after that. The sad thing is that Dad basically killed himself w/alcohol.
Maybe if I'd stayed around, he (and my 3 bros) would have seen pots not such a bad thing after all.

that is awesome with your dad... you are obviously a man of much acquired weed wisdom; any strains come to mind to help me convert stubborn old man over to the smoke scene of our new millenium?

oh... its "michoacan"..(thanks google:mrgreen:) i was familiar with the word you were thinking of and had to know how to spell it.

BACK IN THE DAY....when I was young & had alot of hair, it seems the smoke was much more potent than today. Now, mind you the smoke today is AWESOME! I am lovin' the seed banks that we never had back then, but it seems that smoke has evolved with time. We used to wear bellbottom pants and grow our hair long then, today if you do that, you are in fashion. Guess what I'm tryin' to say is what's old is new again!

Salute to you & your Dad!

Real Thai stick was awesome..1 of the strongest things I ever smoked...In 1975 it was $25.00 a gram...and worth every cent...No way one person finished a joint..
giggle like an idiot for hours....For me the old was stronger...I know new studies
say different...but how do they establish that...someone still had some old ?..plus back then the testing wasn't as through as modern day tech.

i love it.....you're old mans gotta point. oh how i remember 4 finger o's for $30.00 back in '79.........funny how there weren't a thousand names. i remember specifically the columbian red....and yes the buzz off the best was hallucinogenic .....great visuals and an absolute stooooopid high. maybe take him some good sativa, but good luck finding it. its all about stoner friendly strain names and 8 week grows now. nothin wrong with it...i love it. your dads oldschool and no matter what you give him in his eyes it will never be like " back in the day". what a great debate to have with the old man.....my son and i do the same....smokin every step of the way.

i think you are hitting on one of the major points here; back then, the different kinds of smoke were fewer; each strain having its own qualities, thus making each one its own unique smoking experience. now, i believe that those qualities have been mixed and meshed until most smokes now are just a gumbo of those old effects; with the occasional suprise thrown in here and there. one thing that constantly comes up is something like "back in the day, you were able to know your weed. if someone told you they had panama red, you didnt have to take their word for it; you could look at it and know; you could smoke it and know." just an example, but i can understand where he is coming from.. so now that i have a few old stoners' attention:mrgreen:... any recommendations on a strain to grow for my pops? here's the severity of the situation; he dislikes modern commercial dank (and its price), that he smokes shwag; says its a better deal for your money....but if he could find something spectacular....:blsmoke:

A cigarette pack size piece of hash was $70.00...I sold acid then and paid $50.00 for 100 hits at 500 mics each....you'd do a 1/4 and trip for 18hrs..The mescaline was $40.00 and ounce and made 50 horse caps..shrooms were about $2.00 a gram...coke was $40.00 a gram and you could smell the ether from your pocket..
angel dust was about the same as coke..stp a bit more then acid..All that for about the same as an OZ of weed now.....at all the concerts the same guy was always there with a knapsack full of huge joints of death weed...$0.50 each...
A lot of young people always laugh about old folks talking about the past...but in reality we're the ones laughing..

Been smoking for 35 years. There is no comparison the variety and potency of weed today. My favorite was the Hawaiian strains in the old days but they pale in comparison to the NL.white widow and kush strains of today.
But it used to be a lot more fun smoking in the old days. Nobody cared. Not even the cops.

HAHAHA! thats awesome bro! something similar happened in my family, but unfortunately I wasn't born yet. My Grandma had made a batch of magic brownies and just left them on the counter to cool while she went out to run some errands. Well, my grandpa (R.I.P., as well) got home and ate a couple brownies... then about 30 minutes later he decided to eat ALL of them, lol... I think the first 2 were kicking in right about then. He had never even smoked, so he got plastered to the ceiling (no, not literally). Anyway the neighbor lady dropped by, and since Dale was so out of it, she was about to call an ambulance... but then Grams got back from the store or wherever she had been, and sorted it all out... claiming he was perhaps just too drunk. God I wish I could have seen that, but it happened several decades ago so I missed out.

Anyway, yeah GoGrow, I think that is probably the case. and thanks for the +rep! If I have thoughts on a particular issue, I usually contribute them. Like I said my dad compared the best they used to get to decent BC Bud, and he used to push ALOT His personal favorite buds were Columbian Gold Tops, which means he had a hook up for bags full of main colas. My mom says that he had the best drugs out of anyone she ever went out with, which is why she married him, lol. So basically he had the best pot available, which was usually something like Panama Red, Columbian Gold, or Thai Sticks, as mentioned by your stepdad. Also, my dad has never told a lie and I don't think he ever would. I mean, it's not like the pot they used to smoke was BAD, it just wasn't quite as good as the best we can get today. Like you say, it's at least AS good today. How could 30 years of selective breeding make the strength of weed go down? lol.

It could be that he prefers the more Sativa high of the types you mentioned. Most weed nowdays is at least hybridized once, and all commercial varieties are at least half indica, because of the shorter flowering period. Maybe if he tried some Hawaiian Snow or some other Haze you might be able to change his mind?

Also, I should mention that the study I talked about in my first post was actually done back in the day, and was not a recent study as some people seem to have thought. Thai-Sticks were the only variety that reached THC levels sometimes attained by the breeders of today, However they found them to be adulterated with Hash Oil, so that is the reason why they were so good. All the other great old school strains were around 10%-13%, which would be about the same as regular BC. If you compare the numbers to studies done today, most commercial strains would be around the same potency as the old school stuff, while the true chronic we have today is often 15%-20% or even a little more. Some strains have even reached the level of the Hash-adulterated Thai-Sticks of old. There may be something to what you say about the types of highs being mixed together though. Thats why I suggest getting him something pure Sativa like a Haze, that may convert him

That's it . . . Michoacan.
A strain . . . hell, I dunno. Whatever this is my daughter found a seed of that I grew, then loved, then cloned, may be the best weed I personally have ever smoked, in 40+ years. It smells citrus-y and tastes almost hashy. Whatever weed might convert him would have to be cerebral and not couch.
At least in my case, the LAST thing I need is to be more relaxed at 57.

Back in the day the weed was good but the main thing is that it was cheap.... I used to get a huge handfull of mexican gold for $5 and smoke all week off it ... ahhh the good ole days .. Im talking 25 yrs ago

Definitely, grow him a really long flowering Sativa with a mind-blowing amount of THC, and I think there is no way you will fail. I'm talkin something so Sativa it takes 14 weeks or more to flower! Any of Arjan's Hazes, or Hawaiian Snow maybe. Also, going with something like "Neville's Haze" or "Original Haze" might be a good idea since they were originally bred so long ago, they might still have some of the same 'high' in them that your ol' man is looking for. Good luck on the conversion, bro :blsmoke:

GoGrow, I think I may have found a strain that he might like. My buddy actually got these as freebies with an order of seeds from Dope-Seeds.com, but they turned out to be some of the best stuff he grew last year. Its called "Colombian Rojo Haze" and is from Seedsman. It is literally the old school Colombian Red, crossed with their Original Haze which is also from pretty old school genetics. My Homie is going to hook me up with some of those seeds pretty soon, and I will be able to let you know if it is any good... but it won't be for a little while. I already have my next couple grows scheduled... I guess I could throw some of them in with the next grow. I'm gonna be growing another long-flowering Sativa so if I have room I'll throw some in and ask my dad what he thinks of the final product, if it tastes like the old school stuff or not.

Anyway, Colombian Rojo(red) Haze from Seedsman, It's about as old school as you can get from most places. I read about a place where their whole deal is they have taken the old strains and have only in-bred amongst the same breed, so they aren't hybridized... but I've never seen this company in any site where you get seeds, so I don't know about it. Once again, good luck.

i've been hovering over the seedsman sections on the seed sites cause he seems to be the closest to "old school"; but on the other note; i believe highgradeseeds is the website you want to check out for the originals you are speaking of...at least it is the only one i have heard of. they have like 3 old strains that were all crossed w/ white widow b/c they only had one plant of each....too good to be true? bs? awesome find?? dont know, cant find anyone to back up their site to justify me trying to order from them.
