Actually, this is just about the oldest debate in marijuana history.
New school vs. old school.

Essentially, what everyone fails to realize is that a lot of the popular strains are, or either come from, those classics.

I gave my grandfather's exgirlfriend a bit of white widow not too long ago, and she said it blew her mind. But when I last saw her, she gave me some thai stick a friend of hers hooked her up with. The real McCoy. Christ. I hated to admit it, but it was incredible.

It's just a matter of what plant, what high, etc.

Bought weed back in the Haight Ashbury by the lid in the early sixties, the "red" and "Gold" was great, but I don't think it compared with the weed of today. Smoked Train wreak and got lost in my own city for longer than I like to think about.

here's the issue; my stepdad and i always have these smoking debates about the weed of today vs the weed of "back in the day". he says that todays dank is good, but pales in comparison to the classics such as acapulco gold, panama red, thai stick, and (not fair) temple balls:mrgreen:. i argue that those strains were the breeding start of alot of the strains we have today(skunk comes to mind). no matter what i bring him to smoke on, he is convinced. any of you older smokers able to recommend a couple of strains that remind you of when weed was sold by fingers and not grams??

I have to say...this is the best thread I've read in a long while. History, strains, debate...it is great! I look forward to reading and learning more.

As a guy in his 30s who only just started 'tasting and growing herbs' on the down low to shake insomnia, constant jetlag and stress...this thread has taught me much...+rep for you!!

man good weed was good then and now the difference is that all those buds back in the day were grown under the real sun took forever to come to maturation and were prime examples of land races..if you were fortunate enuff in the 60/70 to getgood bud it was outstanding, but the majority was mexican dirt weed and the skanky shit jamaicans didnt want to smoke...i smoked some thai stck so sticky it wouldnt burn in a j. that made me trip like mushrooms. that experiance has never been topped by any modern weed, and i do travel to the dam offten..the closest thing i have had lately was chocolope from grey are/ dna genetics also known as the d line... it gave me a real 80s choclate buzz..

me and my kids were watching a video of a large drug bust in the 70s and when they cut the bails open and all the seeds and brown dusty weed spilled out . i told em it was pot they giggle and it took me an hour to convince them pot use to come with seeds and stems... thank god they will never know the tragedy of a flaming seed in the uppholstry or that terrible stem headache or that awefull taste of a burning seed

Man I love reading all of this. Brings back many memories. 15 bucks for an ounce of Mexican.....20 bucks for an OZ of Colombian gold. I had a couple of friends back then, early 70's, who worked with me in a factory. Every week we picked up a quarter pound for 45 bucks. We each bought an ounce and the one that was left was for partying with others. Panama Red.....best tasting pot ever....imho. But I have to agree that pot has gotten much better. I started growing my own indoors a few years ago. I've got some NL and Skunk #11 growing right now. What really makes me smile as I've been reading these posts, is the number of folks who are smokin' with the parents. I've got 2 kids, one who is 21 and my other boy turns 20 in a week. It was about 2 years ago when I walked into one of their bedrooms without knocking. I open the door and there's my oldest son taking a hit off a red "G Graphics" bong. He looked like he was going die when he saw me standing there. I chuckled and told him to hand me the bong so I could catch a buzz too. Guess you had to be there.....lol. I took them to Amsterdam a few months ago and we had the greatest time. We got so high everyday. And the coolest thing was when we got back home, my oldest thanked me and said the trip was the highlight of his life. I hope I haven't bored you to death. Rock on & keep tokin'

Peace out! :peace:

back then my toerance was much lower! I remember crawling home(5 blocks) on some colombian brickweed that didn't affect others! or the time we went through my friend's dad's stashbox to find a joint worth of acapulco gold...it was hallucinatory!...now here I am...I need diesel hash 50/50 with killer pot, 'cause 20% just aint cuttin' it!!! I wish there was a pill that instantly made you like a 13 yr. old lightweight!

I am 51 years young and my Dad was a folksinger and a beatnick(sp). I remember as a younger lad, the availability of the crappy brown mexican brick weed. You squezze a bud in your hand and it turned to dust. You could by a 4 finger bag for $12.00 Pounds of it were $110.00

It was a guaranteed headache if you smoked too much. That was the every day weed. Now I recall fondly the few precious times I smoked the Acupulco Gold - Panama Red - Thai Sticks and Hawaiian.

I think the smoke today is generally better. My dad was smokin until the day he left for a higher plain. I always use to get his weed for him. He used to be so amazed at the quality and he was comfortable enough financially to be able to buy whatever he wanted. I was always on the hunt for something cool for pops to smoke. God, I miss him.

just quit for two weeks and you will be suprised how much your tolerance goes down....

well im not that old, but i'll share my favorite story from my dad's glory days.... for awhile in the 70's, they were getting Nepalese temple balls...
balls of hash marbled with opium... says his buddy had a running bet with anyone that bought any that if they could take more than two hits they could have the ball.... nobody got the hash ball:mrgreen:. i would love to encounter something of this caliber nowdays....

my dadwas a nixxon lovin drunk who thoght pot heads were the same as heroin addicts... god at the dissapointment on his face when he found out i smoked weed , but he let me drink beer and smoke cigs. at all the nascar events when i was like twelve.... now i dont smoke cigs and really never drink alchol..he died thinking his son was a drug addict with no ambition and doing things that tear the moral fabric ofthe world.. never willing to accept thetruth that weed is less harmfull than alchol i wish i could share the joys of growin and smokin with my kids.... but it is still a law punishable by death here in the south.. but when they are adults its on.. i just dont want my kids to look down on me for breaking the law, when i try so hard to keep them honest law abiding members of society with a stong work ethic.

It was $400 a pound in the summer of '72. Friend and I were going to hit the big time and become dealers. On a Friday night we bought a pound after saving for weeks and weeks. By Sunday, we had 1 oz left and no money!! But damn, was that a weekend or what!! I went to SoCal shortly after that and was able to cop really good herb for $10 for a 4 fingered lid! I was in heaven!!
The stuff I smoke now is OK, but then again I don't smoke to the point of passing out, I guess I am maturing or somethin'! I am in my 5th decade and back to smoking after a 35 year break.
Watch out y'all the baby boomers are retiring and we have time on our hands!!!

I think the weed in general is much better. I'm not even going to consider the mexi schwag I can get, it's barely pot.

But that is just in general. I had a friend that could always get thai, or vietnamese, cambodian...just this crazy potent shit. Other cultures have been refining weed. We just passed alot of it by.

Santa marta gold has a personality. So does Panama red.

It's kind of like liquor. I haven't even drank a drop for twenty years. But I can still taste old granddad bonded whiskey if I think about it. A real consistent flavor.:weed::hump::weed::hump::weed::hump:
