Arctic Sea-Ice Volume Continues to Decline

The thickness of Arctic sea ice continues to decline, according to the European Space Agency (ESA)

The conclusion is based on three consecutive years of measurements by*ESA’s CryoSat satellite mission. Scientists often measure another factor, sea-ice extent, but ice thickness, the agency says, is a “more accurate” measure of the changes taking place at the top of the world.

Professor Andrew Shephers of the University of Leeds in England told an audience at the Living Planet Symposium in Edinburgh, Scotland Wednesday that CryoSat “continues to provide clear evidence of diminishing Arctic sea ice.”

“From the satellite’s measurements, we can see that some parts of the ice pack ice have thinned more rapidly than others, but there has been a decrease in the volume of winter and summer ice over the past three years”, he said. “The volume of the sea ice at the end of last winter was less than 15,000 cubic kilometers, which is lower than any other year going into summer and indicates less winter growth than usual.”

in my opinion MASS is what counts.

the data provided by noaa is based largely on the estimated decrease in "multi-year ice" from a baseline in 1981 (the apex of a global cooling trend that spurred fears of a coming ice age) with very little data collected before that time.

i trust noaa to provide the straight dope on the numbers, but i do not assume that their editorials or their press releases necessarily reflect the science (government agencies need a raison d'etre and justification for more money)

sadly, as mentioned before, in the late seventies, and early eighties the selfsame organizations were screaming about a coming ice age, due to a global cooling slope which then reversed, and now there is (not surprisingly) a warming trend.

this warming trend in specific, and the overall warming trend since the 1600's represents the retreat of the mini-iceage which occured in the "dark ages" peaking around 1600AD, and we still remain below the mean temperature of the Medieval Warm Period which spurred the Renaissance.

TLDR; yeah it seems to be getting warmer, but only in relation to how cold it was earlier.

why if those trends continue, surely the earth will become uninhabitable!

they will however continue for (most climatologists agree) another 100-200 years of warming and then a slow descent into another FULL ON ice age, over the next 8-10 thousand years.

So, this is saying the swing is the biggest we've seen in history. Not that were trending downwards in temperature, instead that the amplitude of the frequency is increasing. so the ride is getting crazier and crazier. I sure hope people don't get the idea that were headed towards an ice age. It suggests our winters and summers are going to be reaaally cold and reaaally hot. I know record high temperatures were beat by record lows this year, why are we breaking so many records?

We haven't been keeping records very long. And much of that wasn't very accurate. But we surely will enter another ice age. Some lasted millions of years, some just a few hundred thousand. No one knows why for certain. Most of the time since life evolved on Earth, we were in ice ages. Iceball Earth is the norm, not the exception. The "warm" ages, then and now, are just brief interludes.
