I change my rez every 7 - 10 days so I don't really worry about topping off nutes. I just make it slightly hot for day one and then it slowly goes up and down over the week.

Not sure if that is right or wrong but it's been working for me. Good info to know though If I ever decided to top off nutes. Only thing is I don't quite know what each ppm number for the different nutes are.

Do you take a PPM reading with the addition of each nute?

The question that raises is how long is the add back method good for? Without actual lab testing there is no way to know. Since the plant uses varying amounts of X Y and Z the very first add back the quantities in that PPM are going to start changing. If you ran lets say for a month, 2 months, that 1250 ppm is going to be quite different in its composition of XYZ. Which in turn usually leads to greater PH instability which I personally only want to PH water once. I think the more PH up or down you add to it isn't good over time either. Basically it will get to a point where the PH won't stay stable for any amount of time and your mix while although 1250ppm is going be vastly different than a fresh batch of 1250ppm solution. Then you might start to see plant issues from either deficiency of X or excess of Z. I don't think the nute savings are going to be THAT substantial to try and push the envelope so close but I just wanted to throw some more stuff out there to fuck with you. In "my" world when I would run a recirculating system I mix it once, top it with fresh PH'd water as needed and once I had added back the volume of the res in top offs, (i.e. 20 gal res, 20 gal added back) I drain it and start fresh. The plants are already growing so god damn nice and faster than a soil container I'm more than happy to be satisfied with it and it couldn't get much easier to maintain. I also never look at the res PH other than the first mix and the PH of the top off.You may have already addressed these things, I see you are a lot better with math than I am and I haven't got all the way through your thread yet so take what I say with a grain of salt eh

Absolutely agree with you here. I change my bucket once every two weeks for that very reason. Usually, I'll use the calculated addback system only once in that amount of time. And, only after I've added fresh water (at the moment - once weekly) so that I don't have to add more pH down. The nutes have been dropping the numbers to well within comfortable range, so I'll more than likely stick with the bi-weekly schedule at least for veg. I've been considering weekly res changes when flowering starts, but money is a bit tight, so, that may play a role in what ends up happening.

Whatever works for you and your plants, I say go for it. I do not judge, and in fact, love hearing about the different methods people enjoy using for their own unique situations. I do not take ppm readings after each time one individual nute is poured, but if those are some numbers that you'd be interested in seeing, maybe that's something I can accomodate you with, next time I change the res. Just give me a holler.

What I'm currently doing, on top of the 2 readings when a fresh res is poured, and the two daily am/pm readings, is taking 3 individual PPM measurements each time anything is added back:

1st reading - Before addback
2nd reading - After addback
3rd reading - 1 hour later to split the difference in rise or fall during that hour (we are trying to hit a moving target here afterall). If I can remember to account for my water's base-line PPM - then it's a good day.

I'm glad that it's working out for you. I haven't ran into any issues using this method so far. And, would suggest it to anyone looking to try something simple.



Supreme Delight was pruned for 4 on 10/31, and here she is this morning. Yowzers. She didn't even flinch.



NL5 x Haze is really digging her bondage. She's responded the best to the LST so far. Not much else to report. Veg = boring. I'll see about getting some videos together for my next update.

Thanks for stopping in, Stew. Yea work sucks. But, it matters not! As long as I have my ladies to come home to. For the autos, I topped for 2, and, either let them go au natural, or tied them down. The photos have all been topped for 4 (including the WWxBB) then, in about a week or so, will either be pruned to become 8 or 16 headed beasts. Love your 10 gal pot from seed idea. Your roots will be symmetrical, energy efficient, and your girl will be completely stress free, which is the key to a killer main-line.

Not only the 10 gallon from seed. But, I already mentioned this I think, I'm running short grows the next 2-3 grows. SHORT = 12-14 weeks total growth.
1 week seedling
2 weeks veg
9-11 weeks flower.

This way they can be straight buds up the stalks because their main height will come in "The Stretch"
