ever see how much stuff they find under water? cities that are still erect,statues,ect. they didn't build them under water. thus the water must have been rising for quite some time in my opinion. however overpopulation is taking its toll one rescources we need to survive, food, water, air, ect. thus it has to be worse. I think the earth will heal itself when we try to overpower nature it usually ends bad.dinousaurs ,cavemen,ect.

I wonder how well Orion could work from a standing start. I did see something about propulsion the other day, and fusion version of Orion is possible, if we could get fusion. The design has pellets firing into the laser focus, like they do now out at LLL.
And we have a material for a Lunar Elevator. Spectra could work. And there is a Company designing one. You could get an elevator out to the inner La Grange, L1, from the moon. A stable place if the station mass is allowed to orbit the point somewhat. That would be 36,000 miles.
I really think tethers, a cousin of the captive cable... pinwheels, actually, are the best way to climb this dratted gravity well long term. And they can generate massive electrical power as they swing through the magnetic fields, as well as large, delta V.
The first step can be done with Spectra, just a capture and sling. But, when it gets to the material science, point where that goes to all the way to the Earth, the Station will capture and guide the end connector in a giant, concrete structure for many miles, as cargo is first un-hooked and decelerated, while other containers are being accelerated and hooked on.
What could possibly go wrong? I wonder what the Specific Impulse equivalent would be?

Pretty much.
The planet is going to do what it's going to do, whether we like it or not. The geological record shows a series of hot / cold periods throughout the history of this rock, both with, and without the presence of dumb ass humans.
I support pursuing alternative energy sources, however, it's got to be cost effective as well as "clean", or people will simply continue to use "cheap" fossil fuels and stink the place up.

Maxwell's equations have the answer...but also another problem.
Sticking some grounded conductor out at such an orbit would generate charge (thanks to the varying magnetic field of the Earth as it rotates in relation to the Sun's).
That charge could be harnessed for power. How much would be generated? I have no idea...and I have no impetus to bother manipulating the equations, either.
But at the same time, this creates other problems as the current may create electric forces that would cause extra strain on the cable itself, never mind all of the random lightning/plasma discharges that would probably result.
Regardless, the idea is half-baked (or maybe really baked) and best left to Sci-Fi novelists high on Hawaiian Sativas, sitting in their Sri Lankan HQs.
We probably have a better chance of developing EM propulsion (which is close to zero)...
Practically, there is one way to move tonnage into space. Anyone remember Orion (not the spiffed-up Apollo capsule, but the original)? Nuclear pulse propulsion with an Isp in the tens of thousands.
I do remember that...I haven't heard anyone seriously discuss it, though, in over 20 years. What happened to the research?

I would not say that overpopulation is a threat but there are definitely too many ass holes on planet Earth. We grow enough grain to feed 11 billion people and feed it to live stock. Much of said grain is grown where natural habitat has been cleared. So it is just unsustainable, but not necessarily a result of overpopulation. Malthus was wrong.
As for climate change, I'm of the opinion that the balance has been tipped. There is a natural swing like the scale of justice with a weight dropped on a side causing greater swing, humanity is the weight. We didn't cause the swing, we simply accentuate it and find ourselves at its mercy.
Both problems are results of the abundance of ass holes. The solution is cooperation. A paradigm shift from competition to cooperation is demanded.

I was just scribbling a solution to Pin's Schrodinger equation (for review)...and yes, I believe that is correct for a stretched string.Although, I'm used to seeing that in radians/sec (i.e. ω[sub]n[/sub] )
