    Living Soil Wicking Beds

Coming along. Glad to see both germinate and grow the same. Wicking beds are getting established. No pictures since it's boring, wet, cold dirt with bugs nosing around. I ordered some Red Clover which should show up next week! I'll clear and clean the 4x4 this weekend in preparation for the...

Dr Who is right! ... Rx Green Technologies Report

    EXACTLY what I was thinking! "I'm thinking for myself!" Copy/paste, copy/paste, copy/paste.

Do some cultivars prefer synthetic nutes?

This is the direction I'm headed as well, folks. I saw someone here putting together a living soil bed in their tent by starting with logs found at the river. At that moment, I knew what I was building up to. I even started saving my own big chunks of old wood. I don't know how big I'll go...

Dr Who is right! ... Rx Green Technologies Report

I can't decide if it's a bot or a person. But yeah. Crack. And giving logical information is like giving money to a crackhead. It just feeds into the problem.

    First organic grow, couple questions.

You guys finally got me to do it. I'm starting some wicking beds, and I love how the part of my lawn with clover is green and never needs fertilizer! So today I bought a 5# bag of Red Clover on Amazon for $25. Won't show up until near Halloween, but I should still have time before transplant...

True. Bottom line for me: I'm here every day--reading.

    WTF

They're just starting to teach classes in school where kids learn different viewpoints in online news and social media. They're learning how to tell the difference between an ad and a review. I hope IRA bots are added to the curriculum. For now, the internet is full of people who don't...

    SIP thread -- (Sub-Irrigated Planter)

As awesome as SIPs are, they won't solve my fertilizer problem! Ha! This plant is the biggest hog ever! I grew its mother, so I know it wants lots of N. I uppotted from 5g to 15g at first sign of flowering. Soil was hot, so I didn't fertilize for a couple weeks (it went from regular plant...

    Living Soil Wicking Beds

Anything that creates a bit more reservoir, but doesn't interfere with the wicking, would work great! I used downspout because it was available and free. I imagine there is all kinds of stuff that could work!

    Living Soil Wicking Beds

Between the cat and the cannabis, I have plenty that needs daily attention to survive. It's good to hear a worm bin doesn't require that level of dedication! I think I will clean out that compost barrel so it's ready to be used. It's huge, though! If I can't find a spot in my shop, I'll have to...

    Living Soil Wicking Beds

Thanks for the good words! I'm not sure how the pile is breaking down, but I don't stir it much. I'm guessing it's anaerobic for that reason. Sometimes the grass clippings or fallen leaves get slimy and gross, but it's pretty loose and foresty overall. I treat it like a bank of hot soil that I...

    Living Soil Wicking Beds

The soil is a vermicompost heap with various inputs in various stages of decomposition, mostly anaerobic (I think). It's basically a heap of dirt, leaves, grass, biochar, and non-animal kitchen waste that I stirred before taking what I need! It is chock full of many different bugs. It hasn't...

    Living Soil Wicking Beds

It's risky, yes. I don't know enough about what's in all my inputs to be in control. I'm hoping for a natural balance! My current grow has gnats, thrips, and spider mites for sure--that I know about! I have done my best to manage them, and I hope it doesn't affect the end product too much. But...

    Living Soil Wicking Beds

I wasn't sure if I wanted to start the grow with the tote lids on or off, but your post helped me decide to leave them off! I could use the humidity anyway (an evaporative humidifier is my next big purchase). If I were to use sand to fight gnats, I would use a shop vac to remove it. DE might be...

Two 5G pots, custom soil, just sitting in a window for now. Water about every three days. Any thoughts on yield, @Smokedawggx3 ?

    Living Soil Wicking Beds

They're probably in there. I used Mosquito Bits to knock gnats down once and that took them back down to a manageable level. But I will remember that! The more tools for IPM the better! I hope I can keep a balance with all bugs. Right now it's full of pill bugs and centipedes and a few kinds of...

    Living Soil Wicking Beds

Thanks! I feel lucky to have these seeds. I poked around JBC and a few other banks for months and what I wanted was usually sold! I am new to SIPs, but the plant in my first little hybrid setup was transplanted into that SIP at switch to flower, and what that did to the plant was shocking. I'm...

    Living Soil Wicking Beds

That's pretty sweet. I have seen folks here grow awesome plants like that! My pilot project was similar to that, as it's a pot with gravel in the bottom that sits in a tray. Works great and waters perfectly, but still requires daily watering. I'd like to be able to step away for a few days, though!
