    Beans from 1985

Here's a small sample of the batch that I'm sorting at the moment. They are quite interesting; still lots of junk to clean out, and a few damaged seeds that I didn't spot on the first sort. The small glossy black ones are curious looking! Looks like a decent variety present, which is good news...

I'm moving the journal entries into this thread... 1.10.17 - GrandfatherRat's Bagseed Time Machine Project Now it begins. I have sorted through the seed pile, removed the obvious deaders and any that crushed under gentle pressure of a finger. There were about a hundred dead seeds I took out...

    Beans from 1985

I went back into the two journal entries, and checked the view and edit settings at the bottom. I have both boxes ticked to allow comments, and the selection of 'any visitors' to view the entry. This wasn't working, so I've now changed the view options to Members only. Perhaps that will let...

What the devil? For whatever reason folk can't see my journal entries, all two of them... This is a link to the second journal entry, which is at the top of the blog list at the moment. Hopefully you all can access it. I can't see any setting to prevent views, must be screwing something else up...

Many thanks! Your journey into the world of landraces and heirloom strains has been an inspiration to me, and I plan to make the most of this find.

I have started a grow journal to document this journey; it's open to comment. I will continue this thread for additional discussion and updates. The first update is that I just finished the first sort and count; looks like my first estimate was close; I have 989 seeds...

    Beans from 1985

Thanks to all for some great info! It looks like I will need to have at least a half a dozen or more test groups just to get down the basic variables that will impact the germination rates. I really don't want to waste any seeds, so I'm going to proceed with caution. First off will probably be...

Thank you to all for some really helpful replies. Great suggestion! I'm a forum noob, so this is just the project to get me involved. Also a journal would be a good record keeping exercise. I will need to figure out an easy way to get photos posted and keep up with progress writeups...

Wow, this is just too easy not to give it a try. We have so many seeds... That's a good strain name! Or-- Strocats Strut. I haven't even considered it, but if we do get some plants with good genes, we will almost certainly have to name a new strain. If we get into this and find we've opened...

I think I am going to have to get a batch for comparison purposes, and have a friend grow it out in their garden to avoid confusions.

Great info, and just the feedback I was looking for! This is the second suggestion I have heard about scoring the seeds with sandpaper / abrasive. So the aim is to scuff the seam of the seed, to help open it up? Very clever.

I'm really trying not to get excited about the chances for this one... Your mother had good taste-- the strain is supposedly a potent monster. I would be so stoked to find a seed with those genetics.

This is good news! I was expecting low germ rates, but I remain hopeful.

Land and Heir Genetics / Paydirt seeds

@LandAndHeir; I've been reading through your thread, and I simply adore your work. I'd love your input on a stash of 30 year old beans that have recently come into my hands... https://www.rollitup.org/t/beans-from-1985.931694/#post-13276962
