Super Friendly LED Party Cup Competition - rules/registration thread

Wow, that's a big prize. Very generous of you. Going to up the pressure on the judge - now by far the most difficult position in this contest.

Cheapo DIY Chinese LED grow. 200w

Glad to have you along Psuagro. And I hope you took no offense to the actinic comment - after all here I am spending damn near $1/w when I have many hundreds of watts of perfectly fine CFLs just laying around in boxes.

    Gastanker's 600+w Organic UV Grow

Yeah... I have a portable AC as well as a 24,000 BTU window unit I got from a garage sale for $40 - beast of a thing. Unfortunately my HIDs are in the attic which is ~130 during the summer days. The 24,000 BTU ac unit would cool it but there's no way I'm paying the electricity bill for that.

Beware Agromax grow tent HTG supply!

Can I have it? I'll pay for shipping. I agree that HTG gear is crap but they sell hundreds of those tents... nvm, reread that and realized it was a quote lol. But if you decide to throw yours away like they did then I'll pay for the shipping :)

Beware Agromax grow tent HTG supply!

Why do you think something harmful is off gassing? That's not the only reason plants do poorly...

    Cfl's, veg only.....?

Or purchase a larger tent - that's an easy way to lower temps. Your tent looks great - I wouldn't waste it on CFLs, and I'm a big fan of CFLs.

    Cfl's, veg only.....?

89 is fine. If your plants are dying it's not due to the ambient temps in the tent. I would spend the money on a vented hood and keep the HID. Maybe use a few CFLs for when they are babies just to save energy.

Beware Agromax grow tent HTG supply!

All of my three tents stank real good for the first few weeks. Didn't harm my plants one bit though.

    Cfl's, veg only.....?

This might help - if you're interested in running more wattage for cheaper. HID are easy and pretty cheap but are hot and require a bit of extra gear. For cheap cheap grows I would recommend CFLs. To do it cheap focus on 23w CFLs only (other bulb cost much more $/w and $/lumen) and try...

    Cfl's, veg only.....?

It could... I would recommend an HID for flower - or at least changing bulbs. T5 bulbs are much less expensive than large CFLs.

Beware Agromax grow tent HTG supply!

You realize that you posted the same guy complaining about his tent on multiple different forums? Aside from the 2010 post that didn't state brand name... I have a sneaky suspicion it wasn't the tent. Many growers use those tents with no ill effect. You sure you weren't just frying your...

    Cfl's, veg only.....?

Go with the T5s. CFLs are essentially just bent T5s and create much more re-strike than linear florescents. CFLs are great when submerged between plants but not too good with reflectors.

    Aquaponics insanity...

I don't think he's a troll... He's applying legitimate practices, just to the wrong type of plants. Fish are able to sustain quite the array of plants both under and above the water.

    Aquaponics insanity...

Watering with pond water would help your plants but you would still need to fertilize. Think about farmers - they exclusively use river/pond water.

    Aquaponics insanity...

So large scale aquaponics works like this: Large # of dirty fish (typically they use tilapia) in a small confined area. This creates HIGH levels of waste very very quickly - enough to easily kill the fish if there was no drainage. This water is constantly leaving the small confined area and...

    Aquaponics insanity...

The problems is that even if you obtain proper nutrients you can't offer them in large enough doses without killing your fish. Most aquaponic operations focus on leafy greens which require only low levels of nitrogen.

    Aquaponics insanity...

Like someone else stated it's pretty cheap to make a 5g DWC bucket. But it seems you're doing it right - well done. I would warn you about very slow growth though. Your nutrient levels are going to be really really low and MJ is a voracious feeder. Most hydro guys run from 600-1200ppm. If...

Can anyone explain PPM or TDS?

ppm = parts per million. So if you have 400 ppm you have 400 parts of X for every million parts of water. There is no simple conversion as each fertilizer contains different stuff (X). TDS = total dissolved solids. This is also a measurement of how much of X there is in a solution. EC...

    Aquaponics insanity...

I would recommend you placing both bubble stones directly below the basket. I would also suggest adding additional bubble stones. If you do manage to get the roots into the water and have enough gas exchange taking place to keep them healthy then you'll have no need to worry about checking...

    Gastanker's 600+w Organic UV Grow

Yeah, we'll have to see. And even DIY cheapo cheapo style it's fairly expensive - $180 can get you a 600w HID now a days. But it's a fun project and I've managed to store up a bit of a surplus for myself so if all of this fails I'll still be good off med wise. And the HIDs will be running as...
