Cheap airstones WILL cause the pH to rise. I have a feeling this is your problem. I used to have a rez that I would adjust to 6.0 pH and every time without fail, less than 24 hours later, my pH would be close to 8. I replaced the cheap airstones with some decent air diffuser hose and problem solved.
