It's also a good idea to PH test your water like Jozkins said. $10 - $15 gets you a good PH test kit.. I just use test strips.. Works great.. Also if you're using tap water, let it sit out for 24 hours before you feed it to your plants, to let the chlorine evaporate out..

Any good nutrients will do, They don't have to cost a lot. I use general Hydroponics. The Flora series. 3 part system, like $8 - $12 per bottle. And it lasts forever. It has a feeding schedule on the back, or go to the website for advance schedules.
