Remember that those asshole ants collaborate with termites and aphids.. Basically carrying them around... Termites mostly feed on dead plant material ... like the wood in our houses or decaying trees in the forest The ants built their nest next to their food source... Probably aphid...

Yes I would go with what Puna Bud has suggested.. A pH pen will make things easy for you... You can also use a chemical pH test but that is a huge pain in the ass and often it is not as accurate..
