i did my first 2 grows (sucsessful) with out testing my PH. then i started putting a cap full of distilled vinegar in my purified water. it did help since vinegar is acidic. then i went to a fish store and bought a ph test kit for like $6. it wasnt great but it helped till i finally forked...

i grow in a 1bdm apt. i have 2400w with a 475 cfm fan running through an active carbon filter to get rid of the smell. even 6 plants in an apt can smell it up really bad. but the smell really only get real bad when i flower.

ive even had them in my building asking questions about smell...(coming from my un filtered vent fan) and they never came back. needless to say i have a carbon filter and a ionizer. but no worries about the cops. fuck 'em!
