Welcome to the wonderful world of modern, white-light LEDs, where 30w/square foot (sometimes less) is common, often recommended (by veteran LED growers), and highly effective. It's a very different thing from growing with HPS, and you can't really apply the old HID standards across the board.

Some strains, yeah. But why do it? I don't think many would say that 750w of QBs wasn't enough (some would suggest 600w). I believe 1000w of COBs or QBs in a 4x4 would cross the line if diminishing returns, hence "too much" light.

A lot of growers here will tell you the density of their buds increased after switching to COBs or QBs/strips.

You must be new around the LED forum if you think that's representative of LED-grown bud. (No offense meant, Cindy.) Perhaps you're only familiar with blurple LEDs? Have a look around and check out some of the COB and Quantum Board grows.

Wow, that's a short space. Planning to keep the plants pretty low, I assume? I'd say 120-150 watts, but on a dimmer. Look at QB120s or QB132s. Two of the first would give you 120w, two of the latter would give you 150w.

You definitely don't need 1000w in a 4x4. Too much light. QBs are a much easier DIY than COBs.

What size is your grow space?

The 135w QB setup will serve you far better than a 150w, or even 250w HPS. As for your height issue - you could begin LST'ing the plants early on, or SCROG (or both). I see no reason that you shouldn't be able to use a 5 foot tall tent. You may want to put your ventilation and filtration...
