It's cause that clay is retaining the water in the hole and it's drowning...just let it dry out...if it rains agin I would suggest putting a "clean" garbage can over it or something so the hole doesn't fill with water agian...good luck and welcome to RIU...

From the pics you have it look like they are way over watered...It wouldn't surprize me if you had the start of root rot...hope not for your sake but back off the moisture and let them dry out a little...good luck
