Cover it with Carbon Filter Sheets. They breathe, clean the air, and block out most light. Hardware store, airconditioning section. DIY carbon filter in my sig, if you are interested, But for what you are asking, i'd just cover the holes with a couple carbon cut outs.

You need a little power supply thingy. People have done it with cell phone chargers. You have to read your fan and match it to the charger cable you find around your house. Or go buy one. Splice there are only two options and its either right or wrong. Not hard.
