I would try one in a 5 gallon bucket. Not to much to invest in and if you don't like it no big deal. Its definitely more work, I'm on my first dwc grow so I can't really say the pro's and con's yet...although its seeming to veg pretty quick, just expect to do more work

Im spraying mine with "safer Caterpillar Killer" Has the bt in it and once the caterpillars ingest it they die within 5 days. I just started spraying haven't really seen any progress yet, but that's what a lot of people swear by

Radioshack has those great 60x-100x lighted microscopes thats what I use. Around 10$, I've also seen jeweler loupes at my local hydro store
