So I am just finishing my first grow in the next week or two. I used cfls and fluorescents for this grow but would like to grow again using a 150 or possibly a 250 watt hps system. How many plants do you guys usually grow under these? Also, how much vertical space is needed for these lights? Specifically, how high above the plants do you usually keep these systems? I want to build a box for this grow, what dimensions would you suggest? Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated.

one plant and 6' should be fine for indicas and Sativas are better outdoors.

It depends on the size of the plant...and as for the vertical distance I would put my hand on the tops of the buds and then move the light up until you no longer feel intense heat on the tops of the buds...usually 12 inches away from the tops
If you are looking into building a box I would look into growlab tents...only a hundred bucks or so and you have plenty of slots for fans and ventilation

If you're going to hps, be sure to figure in a cooling method....I set up a 150 hps inside an armoire and had a heat problem....cancelled out that one, bought a tent and 400w hps cooltube setup....Even with the cooltube, I still had to duct in some cool air to keep my temps down. Good luck!

I'm going to have to agree with g13skunk. It's a MUCH better investment in the long run with 400w and the cost is not much more.
