1st journal, 2nd grow soil.

I kept a picture journal of my last grow just for myself. I totally did not know what I was doing, but the poor plant survived and is at the end of her flower cycle.

I had gotten a ton (47) of bag seed from a friend who was going to toss them. I simply could not let them be destroyed. In April I attempted to grow 2 new plants to replace the one in flower. Both turned out to be male, so I started again on May 21st I placed 10 seeds in a wet paper towel and ziplocked. I placed another 10 in a cup of water, pulled out the floaters two days later and placed a paper towel over the remaining ones.

At the time I did not know green seeds would most likely not germ. so I can't tell you how many brow seeds I actually started. Out of 20 seeds, 6 cracked their seeds.

I planted them in Foxfarm ocean forest soil and perilite 50/50. over the next two days all but one emerged.

These plants are some sort of Sativa, all from the same baggie, that is all I know. With these seeds I would like to do an experiment so I am hoping to have even number girls at the end.

I was told a long time ago that birth control pills are a wonderful fertilizer for flowering plants and trees by a local grower. I used it to grow citrus in 4H and my tree's were always double the size of the next healthiest plant. So I had tried it out on my first plant, and after all my mistakes, she's still alive and has some beautiful flowers.

This time I will use Fox Farm fertilizers on half of these, and birth control on the other half. I want to see what does best with proper grow conditions. I have still not decided if I should add a bloom fertilizer to the birth control group when the time comes ??? Any thoughts?

Here is a quick shot of the group taken I believe 5 days after planting.

I decided, since I purchased FF stuff, and I'm spending money on lighting and cooling, might as well plant my 3 good seeds as well. June 1, I germ'd. 1 Pineapple Daisy, & 2 Kushberry. These will not be experimented on.

My little seedlings are all under 12 hours 1000W MH and 6 additional hours under CFL's. Here is a pic of my Pineapple Daisy. The Kushberries were slower to take off for some reason. Plants 005.jpg

One of my original 5 bag seed is "special"

And here are all the plants together. I cant for the life of me remember if this was taken last week or this past weekend. (stupid new iphone not having a date stamp on the pictures like my old blackberry)

Yesterday I noticed the roots showing against the inside of the cups on 3 of the plants so they got replanted into their new larger homes. I've got questions! I know you are to wait about a month to start fertilizing them, do I start the month count over again since they got fresh soil in the transplant? I also want to top the plants, how long after transplanting do I need to wait to do it?

Not much going on recently, topped the four big plants today. Still battling gnats. I notice if I leave the fan on them there are about double in the cup trap the next morning.

I re-potted another 3 plants yesterday. I had just enough Fox Farm to pot one last plant. This works perfect because now I will have 4 plants to experiment on and all of my variables will be the same.

I went to pick up another bag of Fox Farm but the store was out, I got sold on another brand called Vital Earth's Organic Manna Mix. That stuff is much more light than the fox farm. I planted my Pine Apple Daisy and one of the Kushberry's in it. I still have a Kushberry and a bagseed that is seriously lagging behind in growth and I don't really understand why.

The plants I topped are all doing great ... one though, I don't know what I messed up when topping it, but it has 5 main branches now 0_o not 2 like the rest.

I know I started this journal just so I could keep track of everything but comments & concerns are always welcome :).

Lastly, a few pics. My Pine Apple Daisy before she was re potted and all the little plants crammed in their little grow closet.

Plants are growing so big.
Had an issue with the dog last night though. He ate my little "special" plant.

My experiment plants have been receiving supplements for 2 weeks now and the difference is showing.

My control group, 2 plants, consisting of the largest plant and a smaller plant are receiving Fox Farm grow big every other water. The plants measure in at 21 inches and 17 inches today. (I did not measure them at the beginning, stupid mistake on my part for an experiment)

The experimental group, 2 plants, consisting of one plant only an inch shorter than the tallest one in the control group, and the smallest by a good 3-4 inches, are receiving birth control only every other water. Today they measure at 26 & 27 inches tall.

What good is the thread without pics? First pic is of one of the experiment plants, second is the control, third and fourth are side by sides.

Any comments on how the plants are looking? I know the pics are not amazing, I'm working with an iphone, sorry.

Things are progressing nicely. I moved the plants out of their little closet and into the grow room so they have more room now. Added a second fan and the gnats seem to be gone. Dunno if the move, or the fan or what caused them to stop breeding but I'm very glad they did. The plants are no longer slightly droopy from over watering either.

I began using a tea on my non experiment plants, mostly after simple curiosity lead me to the organic's threads. A Vegan boyfriend gave me the final push to try it and I like the results.

A downside though, My 2 plants in the control group seem to be suffering a def. of some kind. I think it might be Mg, but I'm so new to growing it's hard to tell. The leaves are lighter color than the other plants and there are a few brown spots on some of the largest fan leaves. I gave all the plants a flush 2 days ago and setup a new batch of tea to brew. I'm hoping this will help. Funny how the plants only on BC pills are doing fantastic.

Well its been a long time since I updated. I set the plants to flower on 8/1. Just pulled 2 males today. One from my control group and one from the experiment, so I guess this works out. I'm wondering if I can take some sac's from them and save them in a ziplock to pollinate a bud of my favorite a little later. I'll have to do some reading up on breeding.

Nothing really to report other than that. Happy Growing everyone :)

Thanks for the response :) +rep for my first comment on my journal :) I took a quick pic the day I threw them into flower. I'll have to get back into taking more.

I chopped down the two boys and used the top two stems from the beast one to hopefully collect pollen. I have them sitting in a plastic cup inside another cup of water. The cuttings were moved to a friends house so there is no way they will throw their demon seed all over my girls.

And now on to the pics.
The two front, left plants are the control group. The beast on the right and the one in the back are my experiment plants.

Pic 2 is the male I'm trying to collect pollen from.

I have a cold so I'm not doing any work this week, runny noses do not look good on camera. Perfect time to catch up on my picture taking.

Here are a few shots, JUST starting to bloom. Day 14 of 12/12.

My male has started opening sacks today. There is pollen dusted all over the leaves and bottom of the cup. I have only found a few posts on what to do next. One says cut the flowers off and store them in a baggie in the freezer, the females should be pollinated around 2-3 weeks into flower ... is this correct? My females are 2 weeks in, should I just take a q-tip of this stuff home now and brush it on my girls?

Oh, forgot pics of my male clippings all dusty. I can see where this would be a nightmare if a sack opened in a garden unnoticed! There is yellow dust all over the window, leaves and inside the cup and I'd say maybe a dozen sacks have opened between both clippings.

I will be pollinating a single bud of my better Kushberry and a lower bud or two of my Pineapple Daisy.

Also confirmed today that my little "special, slow" bagseed plant turned out to be male so he was disposed of.

The ratio of males to females with this bagseed is really unfair. I'm hoping its just bad luck and not genetics ... I'm only using my beast male's pollen because it was such an amazing plant. I thought it would be nice to try breeding.

WTF? Why are all of my pictures turning sideways? When I take them off the phone they are right side up. Stupid camera phone. Sorry guys, I'll have to figure this out.

Jovreef,

Good on ya for taking a crack at the breeding thing. Come up with something insane and send me a cut.

My inexperienced little self could never come up with something as good as you grow but hey, I'll try anyway.

I took a Q-tip and rolled it over a lower bud. I did not think the pollen was coming off the Q-tip so I stuck the bud into the bag and rubbed it around. I then put a bit of yellow electrical tape around the branch to mark it. Today the pistils on that bud seem all curly, I'm assuming that means it worked? Another half of the male sacks opened over night so I'll dust up a bud of the Kushberry tonight.

Jovreef,
Sounds like it worked. Are you keeping up on the birth control feedings? LOL. I've heard that too, but never tried it.

Plants look good...maybe just a tad on the light green side...could just be the strain. They look to be pretty sativa heavy from the leaf shape/size. Not a purebread sativa, mind you. Maybe I missed it, but how many males and how many females do you have going from the bag seed? How did the 3 "good seeds" do?
