(2) 400W vs (1) 600W HID?

Hello,

I have a 56" x 56" x 78" (4.67' x 4.67' x 6.5' ) grow tent. I am going to have 12 hydroponic bubbler units with between 24-30 plants total. I currently have two seperate carbon filters venting out of the tent (1 smaller 7lb and 1 15lb with a second 6" duct fan, not incline!).

I want to properly cover the entire grow room with light. I currently have a glass HID fent fixture that I can connect to my vent ducting.

I want to know what the difference would be between (1) 600w HPS and (2) 400W HPS? Would it be worth the hassle? Would two fixtures end up creating too much extra heat to be worth the added benefit? Will (1) 600W HPS properly cover my area?

Any thoughts or advise?
Thank you! :leaf:

One last thing... as much as I'd like a 1,000W HPS - I'm affraid I wouldn't be able to control temps in the summer time? Any thoughts with that? The regular temp in my place will be 75 degrees.

A thousand watter would be ideal with that space. If you used a 6inch cool sun hood they cover a 4x4 area. And if you vent the hood you will not have a heating issue.I have a veg room with 2 1000 watt hps in a basement and i've had no heating issues with it even in the summer.I would recommend running your lights at night though as it is cooler out then.

Yes - venting just outside of the tent.
Any thoughts on having (2) 400W HPS? Any pro's or con's with going that way? I was thinking I could air cool both lamps on the same ducting and get maximum coverage, with lights closer to plants?

Ah, so you did.
That's arguable, but I tend to agree, howver in a space that is just under 25 sq ft. it's overkill..... diminishing returns ans what not.
in a 4x4 its overkill?

if you use a 1000w hps bulbs that emits ex. 150,000 lumens and you do not use an aircooled hood, you would have to have the light at least 2 foot away

150,000 / 2x2= 37500 lumens

if you do use an aircooled hood then you won't get any more coverage at 1 foot away then you will with a 600 due to the direction of the hood

if i use 2 x 600w without aircooled i can have them 1.8 foot away

so each light will do 92,000 / 1.8x.18 = 28395 lumens,

if i use aircooled hoods and get them 12" away then i'm getting 92,000 lumens and getting the coverage area

this is why in that space 2x600 beats 1x1000

Plants don't use lumens.

no its a term more used for humans and our perception of light, but it is the way we most commonly converse about light for plants,

but 2 600s does work better and give you better coverage from 2 light sources

a single 600 is not enough for a 4x4 area, the plants around the edge would not get enough light, a 1k would cover that area but you would have to back it away to cover it well so then you sacrifice giving the best light to the ones in the middle for a more even ground

with 2 600s you get the intensity everywhere

a lot of people will disagree with that, i don't care who subcool is or if he is a breeder blah blah blah because

5x5=25sq foot = 24w per square foot

most pro's recommend at least 50

92000 lumens / 25sq foot= 3680

you may as well just use cfl's as use a 600 in a 5x5 area

250 watts in a 3x3 area, thats just crazy

not gonna get decent dense bud

plus what kind of reflector would spread a light around a 5x5 area, only a parabolic cone style reflector, which are generally 4ft

600w is a 3x3 area
