Ha, We've only got a swamp cooler and I still haven't uncovered it from winter. The old house is going to be burning this afternoon.

I was thinking about it but I would rather have a skilled craftsman do it.
you can buy film that reflects a good amount of radiant heat at lows and its realy easy to get set windows can i see a pic make shure they fill in the gaps with spray foam after plumbing the window keeps in the cold and keeps the heat from faster infultrating the inside threw cracks and open spaces in the wall is it siding or stuco???

You'd just need to be sure to get your plants out of sight beforehand if you have someone do it for you.

Thump is dead on with the spray foam. It's a must for any exterior door or window.
It's really not hard at all to install the retrofit windows and I'd be happy to help you with it if we could do it on a weekend. It doesn't matter to me if you get the retrofits or the new construction windows. I'm down either way when you're ready.

I can get the Anderson retrofits for a good price from Ganahl Lumber. Double-paned high E glass.

I have brick on the front of the house - so no go on new construction windows. I am replacing aluminum crank windows from the 60s.

Do you know a good place to get windows? Weekends are fine with me if you can get it mostly finished in a weekend.

I used to get my windows from a place in East Riverside but that's only because I was working mostly out there for a few years. Now I just go to Lowe's, home depot or Ganahl. The savings wouldn't be worth the drive to go to riverside from your area.

that's cool that you've still got the crank windows. I know they aren't good for insulating but I think they are cool. Those and vertical sliders on old historical homes with wood frames and slides.

How many windows are there to replace? As long as there's not too many, it could be done in a weekend. Might be able to do it in a single day if we did it together.

We had double-hung windows at our first house. I fixed them all - major pain. All painted shut and broken springs and cables.

I was going to start with one window and go from there. There are 16 total. What do I do with the old window? If I could remove it intact I could use it for the greenhouse :)

i would do it but i have a job that is way to hard to leave for more than 4 hours i cant but i can tell you about energy efficent pella window..seemed that all the wealthy people that were smart in my case orderd pella windows i could be wrong but i think pella at the time were ahead of the game with double pain windows and a gass they put to reduce the amount of radiant heat that travled into your home reflecting light uvb light and also not transerfing heat from the window seal that can radiat heat from the frame wich will lower your over all r value, see the over all value is calculated in a calculation of cracks creveses and radiant transfers of cold or hot their window i think they have a few diffrent choices but they do have a plactic that doesnt alow much room for transfering heat or cold every house we built we only built for high end owners that were very viscous with knowledge and the smarter they were the more keen they were also our homes were all energy efficient and had archetects that were supper brainy acs 2 x 6 exterior walls on everything and foamed every corner and every crack no bugs to hide or no air to worry about make shure they seal them lil by lil im shure you can get your house fit for this purpose!!!!

mo the issue with a brick house is the nailing strip is behind the brick. i have cut them out with a sawzaw and a long dioblo blade, and it is a bitch. the best way is to collapse them in on them selves, and can them.
so to kessils my cab i took the cfls down in has taken off under the leds. I AM SOLD! i love them i can see my plants now. no big hoods in the way. temps have dropped by 15 degrees. i would have to open the door when my 600 was running and now i have no worries. it look like they have grown 6 inches and i super cropped them when i put the lights in. the leaves have doubled in size. the cfls will stay till harvest on the 600 room and i am getting some more leds. i would do it now but daddy is getting a new camera:)

looks like we will be staying here for now. we have not figured out if we want to stay in south LA or go somewhere more friendly. we have been offered this house but it will take some work. i would have to fix all the crap he did and the crap he has not done. strieght off i would have to jack the whole house up 6 in, replace all the seals, and bring in dirt so under the house is not the lowest point in the yard. the list just keeps going, but i have done it all before. plus there is a part time cop it the house behind me, and a narc less then 100 yards in the front so outdoor we be a no-go. the schools here suck ass, so i will have to put my kids through catholic school. i am not a big fan of the catholic church, so i am not over enthused about that. so west is looking good to me, but i am not so shore the old lady has over come here fear of that kind of uncertainty.

My new Kessil setup. I have Gorilla 2x2.5 tent setup now with all Kessil lighting. As you can see one side is more red. I have an H150W Red and H350 Magenta on that side. The more purple side has a H150W Blue and a H350 Deep Purple. I have fruiting tomatoes, cayenne, and sweet peppers on the red side. All are 3 plants are growing ample fruit! On the purple side of the tent you can see my herbs...sage, oregano, and rosemary are all flourishing. I just wanted to do a run of veggies to compare how Kessil grows veggies. I already know how well they grow my medicinal crop.
