4 the Newbies... Keep it simple

my plant had a crappy start. I hope she's ok. All the pampering probably isn't making things better.

I think the stem is healthy, it seems very strong. I am more worried about the foliage not being bushy.

The foliage thing is more of a strain trait... some plants grow bushier than others... Do you have any pics? I would love to know how you had her growing... is a transplant in order? and what are you using for light, soil (or whatever medium)???

I added some stuff to it the other day. Something I got from the hydroponics store called CNS17.

Your plant is much prettier and lusher. Mine looks like a little tree.

lol, the story of the plant is as follows:
A few months ago, I went to the dispensary and got a bag of medical Sativa dominant pot and it had 3 seeds in it. I had no intent of seriously growing a plant but I figured why not plant the seeds. I had a cheap bag of potting soil outside because I grow (ususally kill) other things - herbs and such. I planted the 3 seeds in a paper container, not even a plastic cup, the bottom of a progresso bread crumb container and popped some holes in it. A few weeks later I had 3 sprouts. I went to home depot and got 3 3-gallon containers and brought them home, replanted these plants in potting soil in individual containers and left them on the balcony. A couple weeks later I went outside and 2 were dead, the 3rd was looking larger. So I poured the 2 bad ones off my balcony and left the growing one outside. We had very cold nights, 40s and 50s and not much good sunlight, tons of rain, moonsoon like rains and wind. It's started to get dry here so I gave it some tap water one or two times but usually it got rain water. A couple months pass - fastforward to the other day. I was thinking it's probably time I do something to identify whether the plant is male or female. I inspected it for a while, couldn't tell even having read 20 articles on how to tell. I did however see some white hairs on the top. That's when I decided it must need some kind of attention and I ventured to the local hydroponics shop where the guy gave me food and told me about a class but I went on the wong day and missed the class. So I came here and started asking my ludicrious questions. It's an odd situation, the plant is not a baby but I am a beginner. I haven't done anything yet.

I just did a little research and it turns out I sent a pic to my friend the first week in Dec and the plant looked like this:

That was probably after a month or two of growing.

Now it looks like this:

What do you think? Can it possibly produce a decent bud after a start like this? It is probably bad that I get my hopes up. I've started bringing her inside at night in a light room. I think she was going to flower if I didn't because the nights are very long. I wouldn't have known this if I hadn't read here. I am just trying to put 2 and 2 together...

For the age of the plant it is growing very slowly. The lack of aeration material in the media, like perlite, would indicate this is the result of stunted root growth rather than just light inadequacy.

That plant can grow some buds. Don't worry man. But it is going to take a long time to finish. Assuming you are in the Northern Hemisphere I'd say you shouldn't plan on harvesting anything before October and grow her outside somewhere.

In the mean time here's what you can do to make a few improvements:
1. Repot the plant. Prepare another planter with a 50/50 mixture of organic potting soil and perlite ( a Tbsp of dolomite lime is a good addition as well). Carefully remove the root ball and soil from the planter. More carefullyier remove any excess dirt you can without causing damage to the root system.
2. Watering habits. You want to water to complete saturation, with 1/4 of what you used draining out the bottom of the container. Allow it to go pretty much completely dry before watering again.
3. Feeding. That CNS 17 at full strength is going to be entirely too strong for that plant in that soil. I'd suggest you go with no more than 5ml of the Grow or Bloom at any given time if feeding on a regular schedule.
4. Purchase a single 25w to 28w Daylight CFL bulb and medium sized clamp light reflector. It is an $8 investment that will pay for itself ten fold. Keep the bulb close to the top of the plant to keep it from stretching and to encourage healthy growth. This will allow you're plant to fill out a little. Two CFL's would be better than 1...
5. Make sure there is always a gentle breeze on that plant. Get yourself a small cheap desk fan from target if you have to.

Then just let her grow until April/May, move her outside (at 2-3 feet tall) and let her grow and flower all spring, fall, and summer. You could get a pound out of that girl for little expense or energy with only a little luck.

The plant is already over 2 feet tall. I am worried it will get too tall. I need more leaves and less height.

I am in so cal btw.

great suggestions. It sounds like i need to replant, use a weaker feed and get some decent lights. I hope things work out. :) I was thinking about keeping it inside/outside 18/6 until march and letting her flower outside next time it is 12/12. You think I should go for the long haul - fall? I have family obligations in July and I don't want to leave her alone. It is legal to grow here but someone could steal her.

LST that leggy girl.

Pinning her down will allow the side nodes to fill out and should keep the height under control. Wait until you get it replanted. I used Metal hangers that I cut to hold branches down like this:

This is great...I'm 10+ hours into research (got the seeds coming fr: amsterdam so waiting a bit anyway) and even reading over your 'basic' ideas reminds and drills home things. THANKS! Hope there is more too. :)

If you grow her inside (maybe a closet with enough height) you can control the light and when you want to flower... Most outdoor grows start in late march/early april, and run til september/october... Your plant will most likely be ready before a natural 12/12 light cycle is readily available to your plant. This will also deter theft. A light timer will help you control the lights when your home or away. Have you considered what soil you will replant in? And if you use what you already had I would add perlite for sure... at least a 70/30 mix... also helps to put perlite in the bottom inch of your container for drainage purposes. This plant can be done before July... If you want it to be... Like snow crash said, lst is a good option for you considering how much your plant has stretched out its growth.

Hey i have some sprouts going but one of them only has the round leaves..been like that for a couple of days..the plant is still living i'm just curious as to why it doesn't have the opposing marijuana leaves like the others. Any theories??

I haven't moved forward at all. Haven't gone to home depot for a larger pot.. I am scared to replant since I lost 2 babies in replanting. I know it's bad to be fearful of these things but can't help it. Now I am trapped inside because my check engine light is on :( Things are on hold for a few days until I get this sorted.

How are your babies?

Do you have any pictures you can share with us??? When I used Miracle Grow Potting soil the first time, I got a bunch of random sprouts that weren't pot at all... LOL

MMJ... My babies are doing good, freshly transplanted with no problems so far. My other party cup baby (white widow) is growing very nicely

Thanks! I forgot to add, the transplant is 26 days old, and the Party Cup WW is 15 days old...

I would like to clone my plant.

Do you have a beginners guide to cloning? lol. I don't understand where to clip. Do I need rooting powder? Do you just put it in the powder and then what? Do you have a tutorial I can read?

Can you tell me what +REP means and what it does?

I will get to the cloning... (never have done it myself), but will be attempting it with my WW when shes more grown... I know it has to be cut with a clean razor at a 45 degree angle... a lot of people use rooting/cloning gel or powder. A lot of people use aero/hydro/bubble-ponics for clones to help develope the root system right away. Let me do some reading... LOL
As for the +rep... it's reputation points for things posted, said... for any reason you wanna show a little love to a fellow grower. Its the 'sheriff badge' looking button at the bottom of the posts.

I learned how to do it. How do I know if I have any? It says I can't give you any more. I read about the razor and 45 degree angle but i don't understand the rooting powder thing. I've put plants in water before and had roots grow without any special equipment. I wonder if you need this root powder. I don't feel like going to the hydro store again. Maybe I can order from amazon.
