I understand what you're saying, and I understand the philosophy behind free-market capitalism.
I guess where the rub is, is who pays for it? If the answer is "whoever wants it" then that's a non-starter, because most of us cant afford private police, we rely on the socialized system, just like for fire departments. If only the wealthy can have protection, I fear the outcome of that will be far worse than what we have now.

No, you do not understand the philosophy behind a free market, if you did you would not fear it. You neglect the impact of free choice and how that feedback both insures proper incentives and keeps costs low.
Also, there is nothing in a truly free market that would prevent you from solving the problem you fear, by starting or supporting an organization that provides low cost security to people. Why would you force other people to pay for your ideas, isn't that the thing you're trying to prevent....forcing people ?
Who has the right to use force to make you pay them, so they can "prevent people from using force" ? You want to stick with THAT?
