A test in progress.... Miracle Grow soil vs. Fox Farms soil. Is MG really that bad?

What? Me use MG Organic? Not that crap!! I use FFOF & FFHF :):):) j/k on MG being crap. But really tho, maybe next spring I'll give it a try and see what happens.

Oddly, I mixed mg organic with mg regular...as far as I can tell, organic is just soil with bone meal, blood meal, and chicken shit...pretty basic...seems like it would make a good base for a custom organic soil...

^Yeah, I'm a FF guy, myself. I'm considering mixing up my own batches, after my FF supply goes dry, actually. There's a "super soil" receipe I've seen floating around here, and it sounded really awesome. I want to make something like that. Well, I'm considering coco, as well, after seeing Jondamon's excellent results. :leaf:

for the remainder of the time I attend this class/experiment I'm calling prof., kay jawbrodt? :blsmoke: if ff outperforms mg SIGNIFICANTLY, then I might actually change over, but if the difference is minor, none at all, or mg does better, I'm staying with mg, its just alot easier for me to get around here, and I don't like the idea of ordering a crapload of soil online, that just doesn't look good...I prefer paying cash for things like that...
You have to remember that the test will be under veg. stage only under the same conditions... not flowering. Who knows what will happen during flowering of the two soils. Results could change for the better or worse for either one. Why cant you buy FF at hydro store locally?

I avoid hydro stores like the plague, just a personal issue I have. Seems like if I were a cop trying to find growers, I'd start scoping that out first for potential suspects...home depot on the other hand has people working on anything and everything in there home from gardening, lighting, home improvement, etc.
and its true what you say, but if ff outperforms mg dramaticly enough, then it would be worth it to me to go through the extra trouble to get it, where as if the difference is marginal, I may just do what I was originally considering, using mg organic as a base and adding organic ferts to it...

Where you located Raven if you dont mind me asking? Because here in Cali the cops would running around like chickens with their heads cut off trying to catch growers. But I see your point if you live in a stricter state.

I live in tx.... :cries: while I love our self-defense and gun laws, and the fact we have our own power grid, the enchantment starts fading after that...
In Cali you have the advantage that some of those growers going into hydro shops are legit...here? No such thing...

^I hear ya, Raven, I'm paranoid of those places, too. I'd probably still be using MG, to this day, if I hadn't had such a problem with fungus gnats. Otherwise, I was happy with it's performance, and that was with nowhere near as much perlite added. I'm expecting it to do quite well, actually.

At the first sign of gnats, out comes the sand, again.lol

†L† funny you should mention those little basterds, they've multiplied in my grow room, and I need to get rid of them, probably be after this grow, but any suggestions would be appreciated...note, 2 of them are flowering already..

LOL, Yeah, MG soils come pre-packaged with their larvae, for free, no less! You can get rid of them easily, by adding a thin layer of sand on top of the soil, at least 1/8" deep. That prevents the adults from laying more eggs. The adults only have a 3 day lifespan, and it doesn't take long to get rid of them. It's a good idea to do it asap, because the feed on the end of your roots, preventing them from spreading like they should. Granted, it takers a shitload of gnats to cause any noticeable damage, but either way, I don't like 'em around. Grr.....lol

I'll likely be adding a layer of sand to those in the test, soon. Might even use perlite, if I don't have any sand here. I think it'll works just as well. :)

†LHFAO† that is so fucking true its funny, I'm in san antonio now, but lived mostly in houston, harris county, and in a state known for executions, we had the highest rate, so much so we were back logged by a couple of months due to restrictions on how many can be executed in a given time frame. The one that stuck out was years ago, the first women executed in america by death row, goverments and corps from all over the world were threatening tx (some companies saying if we did it, they may not want to do business in tx, etc) Did they skip a beat? Hell no, her time came up they flipped the switch without blinking, and the only words that came out of there mouth when it was over was "who's next?" For years, hell probably still, much of the rest of the world thinks of Texans as straight barbaric...I shouldn't have laughed, but she had axed to death some dudes wife, and he was still alive when they did it, did not look remorseful in the least, on the contrary, he looked satisfied. I guess as a husband I relate to that, because had it been my wife, I damn sure wouldn't have shed a tear when they flipped that switch...

Her boyfriend beat dude in the back of the head with a hammer then started to steal bike parts. She couldnt stand the gurgling sound he was makeing so she stabbed him with a pickaxe. Then found a chick hiding in apartment dude had met at a party and Karla's boyfriend stabbed her in the heart with the axe. Yeah remember that one all too well!

Have you ever used it ?? So are you calling it crap from experience or just from what you have read?

An awful lot of comments are made in RIU (and other lesser MJ forums) based only on OTHER PEOPLE´s opinions.

Yeah like Raven said I was just kidding about that. I've never used it but with all of the hundreds of different variations you can use with any soil it's really hard to knock one over the other ya know? :)

Update time.lol Okay, there's some drooping going on, with both soils, but I'm not panicking. I'm pretty sure they're just suffering a little, due to the large pots they're in, and the soils being a little wet for their liking, for longer than they'd prefer. Both MG plants are doing it, and one of the FF plants. So, I'm pretty sure it's not the type of soil, just the excessive wetness, 'causing it. Also, I've misted them all a few times, with a weak(1/6th strength) Dynagro Grow and Calmag Plus, fert mixture. I'm figuring that if the roots are suffering, that the foliar will keep them happy til they adjust to their new environment.

Okay, no drastic change, but here goes.....the first two pics are the MG plants, and the next two are the FF plants.....

Could it be that from the pics. it looks like subject #3's leafs are not as big and wide as the others causing the heavier ones to droop from the extra weight? Just a thought. :)
