I would go with the h202, seems like there is mold on the sponges, do you have the AG pump on? you dont really need it in that the air stone will do the job, i would also cover the sponges if they aren't already covered.
the only thing you could do is wipe as much of it off as you can, and it sounds like you have some stem rot going as well
