Advice On Storing Seeds

I searched but didn't see anything pertaining to my question. I enjoy having several seed strains as a back up. I have about 3 different strains right now (I know its not much but that's the reason I created this topic) but I wanted to get all my popular strains and have them on the back burner so to speak. What I don't want is to buy all these seeds and spend over 500 dollars only to have them go to shit within a few months. I noticed that most banks tend to discard their seeds after a 60 day period is reached, or so they say. To be honest it would be nice for seeds to have a born on date. None that I have recieved have had that. Anyway, would sealing them in a vacuum container and putting them in the freezer prolong the life of the seeds for a very long time? Has anyone ever had seeds years old without any issues germinating them? People with first hand experience storing seeds for a long period of time, SPEAK OUT and tell us what your method of storing was.

I use a silica gel dessicant pack to dry down the seeds and keep them refrigerated with it and the seeds inside a sealed container. I germinated 8 year old broccoli seeds stored like that, they were rated at 3 years on the package.
Here's a good tutorial for using dessicants.

I'm not sure I understand so let me know if I do.

1st your place your seeds and gel in a container and dry out your seeds. 2nd you take your dry seeds and place them in a new airtight container with silca gel and store them for long term use. Sorry if I don't understand and thanks for posting the article.

What he is saying is simple:

1. Put your seeds in an air tight container.
2. Throw in a pack of silica gel inside the container along with the seeds.

You've seen those silica gel packs that come in beef jerky bags or other things right? Those will do the trick.

I know its a olg thread but i was wondering would you be able to just buy a bag of beef jerky and use that silica gel pack or can you just buy them? Also would it be better to put them in a refrigerator or freezer?

There is some kitty litter that it completely made of silica. You can get a big jar of it for like $7. You might want to put it on a cookie tray in the oven on warm for an hour or so, just to make sure it is completely dried out. For kitty litter purposes, they might allow more water in the silica than other applications, however it will dry out and function perfectly fine. What I do is put the seeds in envelopes, sealing and labeling them. This is put inside a freezer zip-lock bag. Throw in a little silica and store in your refrigerator. Putting in the freezer might possibly damage the seeds. I think the fridge is perfectly fine. They will last a long time. Even storing at room temp, as long as they are dry, they will store for a long time.
