I dont know if that really captures it. Home values go up in places where a lot of people want to live. The inlaws looked at us like we were crazy when we said how much we paid, honestly it was frustrating as they didn't seem to grasp my explanation that the prices are going up much faster than mortgage rates, it's a pretty unique opportunity to apply leverage towards wealth generation.

People can, and in my opinion should, move to where jobs are, where they want to raise their family. Depending on where that location is, you just have to accept the fact the home is both what you suggest, but also an investment. I moved where I did as i thought it would be a better place for my family...but lots of others thought the same so you have to get out and fight to make it and make that your spot.
