A very good friend of mine got busted about 2 years ago and is now in jail for 5 years because there was a gas leak in his building when he was on vacation. The fire dept. called the landlord for permission to bust in because they thought the smell was coming from his apartment and in the exact closet where the gas lines ran through happened to be his rather large grow as well as his "stash" which included a few unregistered handguns and other "party favors".

How do you guys who grow in an apartment deal with the fact that the landlord can come in whenever he wants (and if you change the locks it's a law to give LL a copy).

I'm about to find a place to live and begin my first grow would you suggest an apartment COMPLEX like with managment and more organization where they give you notice before they come, or an independant apt/house owned by someone else?

Either as owners in my experience have rights to enter under emergency cases. You should be notified but then again you might get a knock on the door, I am in the neighborhood just checking thing. Listening to your experience you must be nuts? Wait till you own.

Well the lesson learned is to keep the grow away from anything thats of importance.

The place where I'm thinking of moving is the same place where I used to live. I remember maintenance would always call you if there was a problem or give some notice if they were gonna change the furnace filter etc.

That sucks lol. I take it everything turned out ok then? And do you keep your plants away from the furnace?

I was thinking you could just always keep your door to the grow room closed/locked from the inside.

Equa check with your neighbors and ask them what their bills run. Get a few for average. Then judge the diff. to see if your twice. If so you better have a good story like huge wattage stereo and computer. May...work.

i grow in a rented house, as the tenant within that property, although i'm not sure what the laws are like where you are, but everyone is entitled to their own privacy, and if someone were to ring me and give me such short notice, i would say now is not a good time, i've got family here, if they try and push it and say well this guy needs to come round now, i'd simply say well you should have checked with me first before assuming, obviously it would cause some agro but it stops you getting busted and booted

well i too live in the North Eastern US, in a recently very lenient state. Our laws are up to 50 lbs. is a misdemeanor. but, anyways, I run a 1000 w HPs and a BUNCH of other stuff and my family are like those energy hogs you see on tv. I pay around $325 a month charged at 15 cents a kwh. Haven't had a problem. Just ALWAYS PAY YOUR BILL!!! The ONLY time I've ever heard of people getting popped by the electric company is if their not paying their bills or their stealing power. NEVER, EVER, EVER steal power.

I live in a huge appartment complex and grow (small scale) with no problems. The appartment complex isn't allowed to ever enter my appartment without my permission - kinda wierd that your landlords are able to do this. There are tennant rights that directly forbid most things like that unless directly otherwise stated in the lease. They can definately bust the door down if there is a fire but that would happen if I owned my own house as well.

I see no state on norml.org that says 50lbs is a misdemeanor... did you mean 50oz?

Always pay your rent and pay it on time. Happy landlords do not generally bother a tenant. Most are just happy they don't have to fight to get their money from you.

Yeah man I saw your grow journal you got a pretty massive thing goin on there. But like the man says, don't steal electricity thats how most big grows get caught.

I am a landlord and I had a renter grow weed a couple years ago. The renter called me because the lease was about to expire and he wanted to sign a new lease. So I told him I would come by in an hour or two. I guess that wasnt enough time for him to prepare.
I dont think he was using a carbon filter because I could smell "fresh growing marijuana" when I walked into the front door. I told him it smelled a little moldy and he should look into a good HEPA filter for the house. I also noticed an empty cardboard box for a 600 watt hps light on the back porch. It was an aircooled hood and everything. I was like, damn, thats better than my light!!!
I was stuck in a delima because I grow weed. So it wouldnt be right for me to tell him not to grow it. And besides man, fuck the law dude. I dont think there is anything wrong with marijuana. The government lies all day long. The bottom line is, he is a good guy and pays the rent on time. So Ill just leave him alone.

Thanks for the input, I'll be looking into the lease contracts when I look for places. For some reason though I still feel better about growing in a complex. Granted there are more ways to get caught (maintenance etc) but they're predictable and would most likely keep to what they say.....

But then again on the other hand if your a good tenant to a LL he shouldn't bother you and even if he/she did find your grow they would probably tell you to trash it or give you a warning before reporting you cause it takes time to find good tenants.

Time to light up another one and think about this some more:joint:

I live in a 2 BR apt and I think the best thing you can do is have your grow in your own personal property. for example, i have mine in my desk and a armior (wardrobe closet from menards). It stands alone and is no way shape or form a fixture on his property. He has to give me 24 hours notice to enter my apt(according to the lease) unless its an emergency. If its in your own property, theres no reason for him to open it or inspect it. He has never knocked on my door or contacted me. I've called him with problems and I pay rent on time.

this is a question with many answers depending on where you live. but a very good question, i'd go with what you said, management type complex. they follow regs and rules because they dont want lawsuits or anything and they are not shady like independent landlords. maby you can even find a landlord that burns? its possible. we have a tiny little note on our door that states " sound sensitive equipment in use, please do not knock, please call (one of my cell #'s) its not foolproof but it make me feel a little better. im protected under prop215 but even so, with whats been going on w/ the raids that i am not yet COMPLETLEY in the clear... YET. good luck man
