why would i think of it if there was no point in doing it?
well if your just wanting to make the plant grow straight then I suppose it will work if you keep re-tying the top to the stake but it will probabbly continue trying to grow crooked.
I just dont see what the point in trying to get it to grow straight is. I suppose it will have less stress on the stalk of the plant later but thats all I can think of....
i think it will help encourage side branch growth. (??) if i let it go it will just hook up and try to grow alongside the pot. on only one side though. if i stake the main stalk straight down then the side branches will have to hook upwards surrounding the whole pot.

in theroy that should work great, well see what the plant hsas to say about it though.

because 6 pages ago they were over watered and almost died. the root mass is at the bottom so when i water it floods the roots. i don't want to water until the roots have filled the whole pot. i may water them just a little this evening. just the upper third or so.
