I have done it. I used a toilet float valve in a 20l bucket. You might have to get something smaller if you want to go with a shorter bucket
Edit I didn't do it for flood and drain and after reading that above my set up wouldn't work for F&D

My outdoor 100 percent dry now pulled it in 3 stages
An made bags up at 500 grams.
Ended up a touch over 16 pound,
As i went back a few times an got a few lots of smalls an cleaned em up. so stayed round 16p mark.
The orginal 16 dried out to round 14 but, i got another 2 bags of smalls.
So all in all pretty happy
Thats 2.6 pound a plant.

Still gotta do a final prune up to, just knocked the big shit off an de stemmed it.

Anyone ever set up a surge tank / control tank for F&D so can have tables lower to the floor and use a larger remote reservoir instead of reses under the tables? I tried switching over to top feed cos I was over getting down under tables to dump the res etc but I prefer F&D.

Which are the best float valves to use?

I can understand where your coming from. Definitely want decent solenoids/valves and run 2 maybe incase one fails.

Seems like the best of both worlds which ever way it leans. In theory that is lol but should hopefully get something decent. The seedlings are strong can’t wait to move them out of the veg cupboard and into a tent. It’s over run in there and there start to get over run by the clones. I’ll probably just veg 2 weeks in there top once make sure I’ve got enough clones and flip. I just want to see what there is and then dial the best 2 pheno’s in the next run.

I’ve built surge / purge tanks before for recirculating top feed and DTW, the “Rule” brand of bilge pumps and float switches are cost effective and reliable. Just got to install and plumb into a suitable tank, wire it up and use a 240v to 12DC pack.

Hahaha, a remote res for F&D did my head in for a while. The loop for when the system is feeding is easy as you can just use the above type set up to pump the overflow return back into the res. The hard part is when the feed pump stops and normally you need gravity to drain the table back via the pump feed line into the res. I.e table height has to be higher than res.
The only “in theory” way I’ve thought of is installing another low point drain on the table that plumbs back into the surge tank, and use a normally open solenoid valve on this line. Use a normally closed solenoid valve on the pump feed line. Relay. So when power is applied to pump that line opens and the table floods, and the low point drain closes. When the pump power is dropped that line closes and the other low drain point opens and drains into the surge tank and pumped back into the res.
That way the only gravity you need is the overflow from when tray is flooding and from the new drain line back into the surge tank.
I’d like to find a simpler way and not introduce fail points, but that’s the best I got so far that would work.

Have you thought of just putting a low point bulkhead with tap on your res and then use a inline pump to empty and fill the res’s? I think the x-tray res’s have a position for the bulkhead if you’ve seen them, bit $$ for a res though at about $150 for a 100 litre.

I just undo the pump line from the res pump and use that to pump out enough water to when I can move the res easily. And reverse that when filling from 60 or 120 litre drums. Got a long hose to use.

Edit: Another possible way would be to flood the table from the top, that way can eliminate the feed line solenoid and the additional low point drain. Just use a solenoid on the normal low point drain that wouldn’t have a pump on it now.

I like the way you're thinking (I've been contemplating something similar to maximise available vertical height), but having problems visualising exactly what you're planning.

I'm guessing you're looking at something 12V & submersible like this:

It has suction cups to hold it to the bottom of the reservoir & "run-dry" protection if it detects low water levels.

You'd need to hook it up to a float switch like this to start the pump if the reservoir gets close to overflowing:


BUT, this is all just a "fail-safe" system in case your F&D delivery volume exceeds the drain sump volume looks like being exceeded?

With a bit of experimentation with delivery volumes & timers, you could have quite the automated F&D system that will never overflow.

Emptying the sump back to the main res. would just be a case of lifting the float valve manually until it's empty.

Am I on the right track?

Thanks everyone for the input and links. I am thinking of using a bucket or maybe garbage can as the control res that sets the height of the flood. Basically the same as this system but sitting the pots in a tray like a regular F&D and flood the tray instead of each individual pot.

So when its time to flood, the main res pump turns on and starts flooding the trays and control bucket. Once it gets to the correct height the float turns on the pump in the control bucket and it pumps back into main res maintaining the flood level. After 5 mins or so the pump in main res turns off and the pump in control keeps pumping back to main res and as water always finds level they trays will empty along with the control bucket until its gets low enough to trigger another float that turns control pump off.

The biggest issue I see is a pump failure in the control bucket.

Edit: I think if the trays are a foot or so off thr ground will give enough room to plumb the F&D fittings which will allow the trays to empty before the control bucket gets too low for the pump. There will always be enough water in the control bucket to cover the pump and it will get flushed at each feed cycle.

Pump failure or float solenoid failure would be your 2 points of failure. Maybe a 2 pump/float setup so even if one fails you’ve got the second to keep pumping out the control tank. maybe an extra solenoid valve an but higher that can shut off the main tank pump if the control level gets too high?
